Will this be risky? Or can I suck it up?

Hi, just looking for some thoughts and opinions (because I’m feeling utterly crap and it’s hard not to be emotional about it)

I’ve come down with a winter virus and feel absolutely dreadful with it. Unfortunately I’m also supposed to be running a half marathon in a few days and I’ve trained for so, so long for this. I’ve got asthma and a heart condition but both are well controlled but obviously with this flu/virus situation I’ve just been generally feeling awful.

Usually when I get this I’m unwell for about 5 days or so which would take me over the half marathon day- I’ve worked so hard for months and I’d be so upset if I had to cancel but at the same time I don’t want to do any damage either… will trying to power through and run with a virus/flu be risky or a daft thing to do? I know I’ll feel pretty unwell but I can suck it up but just don’t want to do any major damage or cause problems? Has anyone ever done this before and have any advice?

just feeling pretty crap, not just from the flu but from the disappointment because I’ve been so excited for months for this!

I’d say with the heart condition and asthma it’s not worth the risk to you. I know it’s not what you want to hear and appreciate that you’ve put hard miles into training but sometimes your health needs to come first. There will be other races. And I say this as a runner of many years. Is it Cardiff btw? Grin

There will be another race, if you are well enough – if you damage yourself this time there won't be. Don't risk it.

As a runner…there’s always another event but your health comes first. I once raced injured when I shouldn’t have done and it caused me months of issues.

Thanks yeah you’re all so correct, I know deep down it’s stupid to run but im just so disappointed. I’ll see how I feel in the morning and take it from there. I think it might be a chest infection rather than just the cold, I’ve been taking my inhaler constantly and bringing up green gunk so definitely not ideal
