Just reading the latest money saving expert email, a guy had thanked MSE for inspiring him to check his bank account after he'd realised that he'd been paying £18 per month on an unwanted direct debit since 2017.. Is it just me?
There is NO WAY I'd not miss £18 per month, I check my direct debits / standing orders regularly, & have NEVER not noticed something from 2017!
Some people must have too much money, methinks!

Good for you I guess. That person was obviously less diligent, but now they’ve learned. Happy days.

I once dealt with a customer (bank complaints) who had had TWO direct debits for AA coming out of his account on a monthly basis. On an account that gave you free RAC cover.

I processed a direct debit indemnity claim for him, he wanted every single payment back. He also wanted it to be logged as a complaint against the bank that he hadn't been told that he had duplicate payments going out.

Some people are just not interested in looking at their transactions. But I'm with you.

I think OP means she would miss the £18 a month rather than she is more diligent than the man in the example.

I know someone who stayed with the same home insurance for 20+ years. Their price went up each year. They were paying £1000+ each year.
I change mine every year & at the time of the discussion, I was paying about £100 per year.

I believe that it never occurs to some people to shop around or they are too busy or cannot be bothered to spend the time doing research.

I change my bank account frequently to get a better interest savings rate.

How many people change their bank savings rates ?

Martin of MSE has been suggesting that people do this too

FunMustard · 30/09/2025 20:36

@Livedandlearned it amounts to the same thing if you're not ever looking at your transactions!

WinterWarmerthanexpected · 30/09/2025 20:37

I check my bank transactions regularly incase of fraud

childrenwatchthefools · 30/09/2025 20:39

I check mine daily - I’m always astonished people have direct debits coming out that they don’t know about! I know every penny that’s coming in / out. I can’t imagine having so much money I wouldn’t need to even notice!

@WinterWarmerthanexpected
I change savings accounts for better interest, but never my current account, I'm happy with my bank. I never change gas / electric supplier either, the one time I did, it cost a FORTUNE, I'm sure I got ripped off along the way..
