‘I’m here for all the witches’

Watched some of the Emma Watson/Jay Shetty podcast the other day including what she said about how she feels about JK Rowling post their disagreement and rift about trans issues. Have also read JK Rowling’s recent response on Twitter, which she posted above a retweeted clip from GB News in which, among other things, a male newsreader claims that EW was ‘snidey’ at the BAFTAs a few years ago when she made her comment about ‘I’m here for all the witches’ (interpreted as a statement of support for trans rights). He claims that she said ‘I’m here for all the witches bar one’, and thus by implication that it was a clear attack against JKR.

Irrespective of what you think about trans issues or EW and JKR in general, AIBU to find it really frustrating that the GB newsreader makes this false claim? IMO if you watch the clip of EW at the BAFTAs, it’s pretty clear that she says ‘I’m here for all the witches BY THE WAY’ and not ‘BAR ONE’. Some of the news outlets at the time seem to have reported it one way, some the other. But it makes such a big difference, because ‘bar one’ would be a really horrible personal attack, whereas ‘by the way’, whatever you feel about the content of EW’s views, is clearly just saying that she has different views to JKR. JKR makes it clear in her post that she viewed that speech by EW as a turning point, which is her prerogative. She may just feel offended that EW made such a public point of disagreeing with hers which is also her prerogative. But I think it’s a real shame if she incorrectly believes that EW said ‘bar one’ and therefore believes it’s more of an attack than it was. IMO for anyone familiar with EW, whatever you think of her otherwise, making a spiteful remark about ‘bar one’ would be really out of character.

AIBU for thinking the media has a responsibility to report on this correctly, as it really changes the meaning of EW’s statement if you claim she said ‘bar one’?

Not looking for a discussion on the rights and wrongs of trans issues, as there are already lots of these on MN - this is a thread about media responsibility to report the news responsibly and not in a false inflammatory way.

Even the BBC aren't committing either way! 😂

And it bloody well looks like EW mouths ‘bar one’. Only two words. Not ‘by the way’.

Mean. Really mean.

I hear ‘by the way’

but also, GB newsreader tells you what you need to know.

You don’t hear anything because she doesn’t speak, she mimes ‘bar one’ - watch her mouth - do you see her mouthing the word ‘the’? No, 2 words, 2 syllables. Ask someone who lip reads

Hulabalu · 30/09/2025 21:25

FunMustard · 30/09/2025 21:07

I genuinely think you should watch it again, maybe with the sound off. Her tongue goes between her teeth for "the".

Not that I really understand what that comment is supposed to mean tbh.

Ok I’m prepared to give EW benefit of doubt then

I agree, OP, and made a similar point on another thread yesterday, where EW was repeatedly misquoted.
I’ve watched the footage many times - she definitely says “ by the way”, not “ bar one”

She definitely doesn’t 😂

During natural speech, people's voices often rise and fall like this. I think it was just a chuckaway add-on to what she was saying, which is why she didn't bother pronouncing it loudly 🤷🏻‍♀️

It was bar one and if it wasn’t she would have said that. Also this has been very much softened over the years. First memory of this is a bar one with a wink and a smirk which has now been removed.

The wink and smirks are still there.

If you go into Settings on the YouTube video, you can slow it right down and clearly see her tongue pronounce "the" in the middle of "by the way".

Forensic - thanks!

I have just looked again and again at the current online version and can see no wink and smirk. Just goes from ‘bar one’ under her breath (which it wasn’t previously) to the winners.

Definitely remember pronounced wink originally,.

To me, watching the BAFTAs clip, EW comes across as nervous and emotional, not snidey. Which tallies with the fact that she has now cried in not one but two public interviews (the first was the interview with Paris Lees where she talks about being made to feel unwelcome in some unspecified social context). I don’t disagree with JKR that she is vastly out of touch with the lives of most real people, and also think (which JKR kindly doesn’t say) that she can come across as a bit self-obsessed and insufferable. But she doesn’t come across to me as someone who relishes being intentionally mean.

How? How can video be ‘softened’ to take away winks and smirks?!

Cutting very small parts out of the online versions??? Surely.

Doctored?

Namechanged555 · 30/09/2025 21:53

Obviously original versions will be saved by dedicated people. But the version you see on google will be able to be ‘softened’.

Namechanged555 · 30/09/2025 21:54

Even thinking back in the day Kate moss and that awful video where she actually talked and was able to pay a lot of money to get it removed totally from the internet.

She is on an awards show transmitted internationally and you think she is engaging in natural speech pattern?

Forensic - thanks!

I rewatched and now see it is by the way. Not bar one as I originally believed. This makes more sense as EW is not a mean person .
It’s easy to see how this can get misreported. Its a bit like when people see a different colour to someone eise.
While I agree with JKRs views, I do think her character assassination of EW was uncalled for. But EW could have also used her voice to say whatever your views, the threats made to JKR are unacceptable and I don’t stand for that .
Easy in hindsight though .

Namechanged555 · 30/09/2025 21:57

In the original video ew clearly said ‘bar one’ with a very pronounced wink and smirk for all the kudos. Not so much any more.

You are deluded and wrong. And want to put forward a wrong perspective.

Namechanged555 · 30/09/2025 22:01

This is where all the pr guys come forward and start to put forward an incorrect narrative. She said bar one. She said that in relation to jkr because it would get her much love and respect from not just the trans community but also all of our young people who have been brainwashed by gender ideology. Including EW.

Namechanged555 · 30/09/2025 22:02

EW was brainwashed in the same way as all the other people her age. Be kind to biological men becoming more woman that actual biological women. Be kind to them and let them take over.

StormyPotatoes · 30/09/2025 22:04

If she said ‘by the way’, can you explain why she mouthed it?

Not that I think it much matters anyway. By EW not turning around at any point in the years since that clip and clarifying that she didn’t say ‘bar one’ because that wouldn’t be kind - her particular brand of feminism - she’s complicit in the popular belief that she did infact say ‘bar one’.

Namechanged555 · 30/09/2025 22:04

I will be honest about rebel Wilson. She said ‘she says she is a feminist but she is actually a witch’. I’d have some hopes that rebel might be gc. But probably not.
