To negotiate salary

Dream job has come up in my nearest city. I live in the suburbs and whilst the advertised salary is generous, it will mean a pay cut as commuting is so expensive (even with WFH days!).

Would it be unreasonable to negotiate my salary?

Basically I want to start higher up the pay scale so that I can cover my commuting fees.

Contact the organisation before you apply to ask if there is any flexibility. Don't apply and assume there will be flexibility and don't not apply assuming there isn't. Don't waste everyone's time by applying and going all the way through the process and then telling them you expect more, you will just piss them off.

It’s never unreasonable to attempt to negotiate salary! They can say no, but it is never unreasonable to ask.

I would ask from the outset. Usually there is a banding.
