Do you scroll through your phone in gym changing rooms?

Is this you?

Literally every time I go to the gym there will be someone sitting fully dressed on the changing room bench, idly scrolling their phone.

Why do you do it? Are you unaware that the people standing over you are about to take their clothes off? I find it beyond awkward but I carry on as if they aren't there. Sometimes a quick glimpse of my middle aged backside sees them off.

To be clear. I'm not talking about people checking their phone for something meaningful or sending a message before leaving or getting changed. I'm talking about sitting down, passing the time, scrolling away idly.

And there is ample space in the ladies changing area to hang out and enjoy male free scrolling space if that's what you want. There's absolutely no need to sit right next to someone in the changing bays.

Any self confessed changing room scrollers?

There is a polite sign at my gym asking people not to use their phones in the changing rooms but hardly anyone seems to take any notice. I think they should be phone-free zones for obvious reasons. I remember someone getting arrested for having a camera in their gym bag 20 years ago, now we just accept it.

MorrisZapp · 26/09/2025 11:54

There's a pretty sharp warning in the gym area about taking any kind of photo, but nothing about phones in the changing rooms. I don't like it but I'm not sure how to make that argument to the management without sounding like a moaning old git.

Any takers?

No I don’t. I wouldn’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable and think I could be filming or taking photos

Aparecium · 27/09/2025 12:10

IMO having your phone out in a changing room is bad manners. It is just like staring at somebody changing in a changing room - also bad manners.

The only time anybody should be staring at another person in a changing room, or getting their phone out, is when that person has no business to be there, eg a man in the women’s changing room. Then it is a deliberate attempt to make them aware that their presence or behaviour is highly inappropriate, and they should leave. Now.

Simonjt · 27/09/2025 12:18

No, but I go early morning so people are quickly getting ready for work. I see lots of diabetics like me using them to make sure its safe to make the journey to work/home befor we set off.

Aparecium · 27/09/2025 12:21

Do they have to do that in the changing room?

YouCantParkThere · 27/09/2025 12:24

Haha I follow an “influencer” who was filming herself chattering away in her local gym changing rooms recently. Some poor old dear behind her trying to get ready (thankfully nothing too revealing, but still). I was thinking, god I’d be raging if her many many followers all saw my fat arse trying to get changed in the background to one of her stupid videos.

NBU for wanting phones out of changing rooms, but ABU for posting this here / wording the title badly

A man in the changing rooms...

Telling us you're anti trans without telling us your anti trans 🙄

Yip, I use mine to check if my bus is on time. But that's not sitting down and idly scrolling.

Men aren't allowed in women's changing rooms. And I'm sorry my title wasn't great, at least I didn't resort to 'tell me... without telling me' 😂

I might.
I mean, my gym is quite small and it is unusual for there to be anyone else in the changing room at the same time as me, but I tend to look at my phone when I get it out the locker. If there are messages / notifications, I will usually look at them before leaving, yes. Does that count as 'scrolling' to you ?
I can't see why it would affect anyone else if there were someone else there, as I would be looking at the screen, not the other person.

stomachamelon · 27/09/2025 13:06

The reason I do it (occasionally) is that I normally go after work and I am not allowed to use my phone there. I check my emails, messages and just have five minutes to myself before I go in.

I have never seen a man or bits that shouldn’t be in a women’s changing room.

I will have a think about it now you have said it though (scrolling)

The gym is my only down time....at all...so yes I will scroll to my heart's content. No idea why you should have an issue with it. Couldn't give a fuck about anyone vaginas waving around...or penis for that matter.

What’s trans got to do with it? Men aren’t allowed in women’s changing rooms.

Musicaltheatremum · 27/09/2025 13:40

I challenged a young woman in the changing rooms who had her phone propped up whilst on a video call. The phone was pointing in my direction. I asked her if she thought what she was doing was appropriate as I was getting dried and dressed. She was very apologetic but clearly hadn't thought about the consequences of her actions.
I leave my phone in my locker. I have quickly checked for calls or messages and put it back again mainly my dad is 93 and does call occasionally so don't want him to worry but I'm by my locker and usually noone else around
