Concerned about my great aunt

My aunt is 79 later this year, still very mobile but a bit stiff, still driving and doing lots of activities - choir, knitting and nattering, driving friends to garden centres etc and she's got all her marbles and is good company. She's just bought a brand new car and driven to Scotland to stay with an old school friend.

I'm looking after her cats whilst she's away, and I'm shocked at the house. She's always been untidy and there's always a lot of fur around the place but I'd only been in the sitting room on my last few visits so I'd not noticed. When I went upstairs though I was really shocked. There's mould all around the bedroom window Frames (uPVC), the shower has that pinky mould and the toilet is minging. (I threw bleach down it). The bedroom carpet is festooned in cat fur. (I was in the bedroom looking for one of the cats)

The fridge is terrible and there's out of date canned food and jam from 2014.

I don't have time to do the cleaning for her but I'm concerned she's going to get sick. Any bright ideas (including keep your beak out)? It's a sensitive thing to broach with her.

you could ask her if she wears her glasses indoors… or if she’s emulating Quentin Crisp, domestically speaking.

I'd say that if she's got to 79 living like this, she's probably immune to most things. Unless she starts falling prey to regular bouts of food poisoning or similar, I'd stay out of it. Lots of people live in what I would consider unhygienic conditions but it seems to suit them, so they're doing what they want. I wouldn't worry.

She's a bit like that lady in the van!
