Constance Martin- sentence

Is it about right? I watched the judge summing up and in my mind I assumed they might get life (and 14 years isn't far short of that) although she is eligible for release after serving 2/3rds .

It wasn't murder, but death from hypothermia. And all the other offences along the way.

What was she convicted of? manslaughter and failing to register a birth. The sentencing guidelines are avaliable online.

14 years seems fair, she's not an uneducated woman so she must have known keeping a newborn baby in a freezing cold tent was a terrible risk

The judge gave a long list of his considerations which were in the 45 minute summing up (which you can watch) including lack of remorse, behaviour at the trial, lying, unreliable evidence, previous convictions, evading being caught. I wasn't asking for info, I was asking if it seemed a fair sentence.

The considerations effect where within the range the judge choose to sentence for. But the judge has to work within the range, without known the actually convictions I can’t look up the range and give my opinion if I think it is a fair setence.

She's about 40 now, so I would say if she serves the full 14yrs it would be seen as justice... my main concern is to make sure she can never bare a child again, so leaving prison at 52-54 should ensure that.

She’s 38, and will have to serve at least 2/3, minus 2 1/2 years she’s already served. There’s another thread, we’ve just been talking about it there!

Judge has said they must serve two thirds of their sentence, so 8-9 years....to be honest that doesn't sound enough to me but not my decision.

According to the BBC, the charge is gross negligence manslaughter and the range is 10-18 years.
