To think that everyone has secrets?

No matter how open or honest someone seems, I think everyone is keeping something to themselves - whether it’s a past mistake, a hidden fear or just thoughts they’d never say out loud. Some secrets are small and harmless but others could change everything if they came out.

AIBU to think that no one is truly an open book and that we all have things we’ll never share?

Agree, even if just an opinion.

my secret is that my son is having drum lessons and we haven’t told his dad as he didn’t agree he could manage two instruments. I forgot to cancel them so we are just keeping it quiet for now.

Ilovemyshed · 14/09/2025 17:55

Yes. I don’t think its a problem except I don’t have ANY secrets from my husband.

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 14/09/2025 17:56

From everyone?

MamaBobo · 14/09/2025 17:56

I think so. Often little things I think. There are some pretty big things I have shared with those closest to me but some quite trivial things I don’t want to share.

FeliciaFancybottom · 14/09/2025 17:57

Of course, everyone has secrets, no one has to be an open book. Some things are simply no one else's business.

Bluebooknumber10 · 14/09/2025 17:58

Yes my biggest secret is I got diagnosed with autism two years ago so apart from the professionals involved nobody knows.

CracklingFlames · 14/09/2025 17:59

Yup. But I tend to share my secrets out. So certain people know some, others another etc. not sure if there's anything about myself I keep completely secret.

Itiswhysofew · 14/09/2025 18:05

I've got a secret that I've told only DP about and will never tell anyone else.

DN & I were talking about this today. I often wonder what people are thinking during a conversation - you're really boring me, etcGrin

Chipsahoy · 14/09/2025 18:06

Yes. However, I don’t keep secrets from my therapist. I actively tell him any I realise I still have.

They don’t all qualify as ‘secrets’ do they? It’s more people don’t reveal their whole selves to people.

Crushed23 · 14/09/2025 23:52

Definitely.

My secret is that I had an eating disorder as an adolescent / young adult and maintain some the unhealthy, obsessive habits and thoughts, though I am now a healthy BMI and eat enough calories. I just see no benefit in telling anyone this, especially as the obsession is nowhere near as debilitating as it once was.

Terracottafarmers · 14/09/2025 23:55

Absolutely. I have lots and lots. One huge one and a few little once's. Always been a secret keeper. I'm incredibly private and only tell people what I want them to know. I do wonder what people think of me although they would never say

Solaire18381 · 14/09/2025 23:58

Absolutely, mine thankfully are the harmless type and probably quite trivial. I don't think I have any that would hurt anyone!

Friendlygingercat · 15/09/2025 00:32

I was 18 when my grandmother told me the "family secret" and made me swear not to have it out with my parents while she was alive. I found out then why my sister had always been the goldren princess and I the black sheep. It was nothing I had done or could have prevented.

I kept the secret for many years after she died (30 years) and the whole thing came out after my father's funeral. It caused such a row that I went NC with the rest of the family.

OwlBeThere · 15/09/2025 00:34

I will go as far as to say everyone SHOULD have secrets. I definitely have thoughts and feelings and experiences that are for me and me only.
