Card got declined for online shop

So we did a supermarket shop online and our card got declined. We regularly transfer money into an account for household things. It’s a supermarket in a small town and so I feel really anxious about the people working in the supermarket thinking we don’t have money and then gossiping about it. We’ll transfer money into the account in time for when they retake the payment but I feel humiliated! Is this an overreaction? Will the packers and people in the supermarket know that it was declined?

I am sure plenty of cards get rejected for all sort of reasons. They probably would not remember two minutes later or assume the Bank froze your card because of suspected fraud etc.

QforCucumber · 12/09/2025 11:51

Huge overreaction - it happens many times a day, usually many times an hour, no one cares. No one notices and continues about their day.

however I will say - with Tesco it doesn’t automatically retake, I had to call them before when it happened to us and make payment over the phone.

R0ckandHardPlace · 12/09/2025 11:52

I’d imagine payments are done centrally and then the orders are sent to the relevant store to prepare. But your reaction is extreme. Cards always bounce for numerous reasons, and nobody bats an eyelid.

xILikeJamx · 12/09/2025 11:52

If your card got declined then you never placed an order and the people who work there will never know about it.

However you probably need therapy to get to the bottom of why you're worried about what strangers who work in a supermarket think about you, not to mention the idea they would ever give you a second thought in the first place.

This.

kindly OP, this is a very extreme reaction to a very normal issue. Don’t worry about it but call Tesco and sort the payment

Greyhound98 · 12/09/2025 11:53

Calm down.

Jackiepumpkinhead · 12/09/2025 11:53

Good grief.

GleisZwei · 12/09/2025 11:55

I briefly worked in a small supermarket, on the floor and in the cash office, in a small community. Lots of cards were rejected at some point or other, yet I don't recall any of the folk it happened to, nor did I judge them at the time. I do remember one lady putting Fairy back to afford her ciggies - she said: 'Oh, you'll think I'm terrible', or words to that effect. My reply was to reassure her that I wasn't thinking anything of the sort and it's up to her what she buys! I wouldn't worry.

Needmorelego · 12/09/2025 11:57

No they won't know.
Or care that much if they did.
Chill 🙂

ilovesooty · 12/09/2025 12:07

They won't know or care about it, so try to put it out of your mind.

MintTwirl · 12/09/2025 12:09

That’s a very odd reaction. Nobody will care, my card got declined, the money was there it was a technical error at their end. Who cares?

Did you get something out of being so unpleasant?

mickandrorty · 12/09/2025 12:14

Its just an automated system the payment will be retaken and then the order will complete. Nobody is going to be running around Tesco gossiping about what a pauper you are 😕it is a bit odd you think people are that interested in you though to be honest.

PennySweeet · 12/09/2025 12:16

Oh come on OP.

Just how important do you think you are to these people?

Are you famous? An influencer? Politician?

If you can answer no to all 3 of the above, no-one's going to give a shiny shite about your card being declined, which happens to a massive amount of customers.

Thundertoast · 12/09/2025 12:16

A good question to ask yourself here is: why does it matter to me that people dont think im struggling financially? Is it the idea of being talked about at all thats the issue - and if so, why do you think that bothers you so much?

Digdongdoo · 12/09/2025 12:16

Cards get declined all the time for all sorts of reasons. The staff won't even know. And if any do (I'm not sure how), they won't care.

Meadowfinch · 12/09/2025 12:18

Don't worry OP. I went to collect my car from the dealership. I'd emailed and phoned HSBC to ensure they knew I would be doing a chip and pin for £12k. Spoken to them in person. Provided the dealers bank details in advance.

The transaction was declined.

It took another two hours on the phone to my bank, in the car dealer, with everyone listening in, to persuade HSBC to release my money.

The banks are a bloody nightmare. They are less and less helpful in making a normal legitimate transaction by the day.

Don't worry OP. Everyone knows it's the banks' fault. They're useless. It's not you.

Icecreamhelps · 12/09/2025 12:19

I work in retail honestly nobody gives a shit.

Dartmoorcheffy · 12/09/2025 12:19

Absolutely nobody will care. My card / phone gets declined all the time if I've forgotten to transfer money into the account I use for shopping. Most people these days have more than one account and this happens all the time, its no big deal at all.

stayathomer · 12/09/2025 12:20

Nobody will know, your order won’t have been processed unless you phoned in the order- it’s the payment that puts through the list. Don’t worry about it, we’ve all been there x

HelloKittyFan · 12/09/2025 12:23

How odd, my card got declined because I had lost it but got a new one but forgot to update my Tesco account so the card was declined not because I didn’t have money. They did actually call me to check what the issue was though so not sure it’s true that no one will know but it’s hardly a big deal?

CaroleLandis · 12/09/2025 12:26

You will have to buy a wig, dark sunglasses and wear a black hooded cape the next time you go out.

DiscoBob · 12/09/2025 12:31

Don't be silly. How do you think the millions of people that live hand to mouth deal with the 'shame' of having their cards declined?

They work in a shop. It happens hundreds of times a day. And so what if the shop workers think on that day you had no money? Being broke doesn't make you a leper who should be shunned and ashamed of their own existence.
