James O'Brien

I've been watching some of the commentary around the assasination of Charlie Kirk. I watched James OBrien who I have seen intermittently before. He did a very snide toned introduction with lots of little barbs at Charlie Kirk which were misplaced in tone. (For clarity I am in direct opposition to the views of CK and find lots of them depressing/outrageous)
So far so normal, radio host opines on something with own political leaning.
However then a caller messaged in to say that he found the tone mean spirited etc and then James O Brien totally gaslighted him saying he didn't do it! He did it all while doing that kind of never ending low mumble style of just going on and on. It was totally disingenuous and I was very shocked! (I know I'm probably totally naive and he maybe does this all the time)
Anyway chatting on here as its such a niche thing that no one I know in real life is likely to have listened to it so no one to discuss with!

He isn't nearly as clever as he thinks he is, in spite of his expensive education. I feel sorry for his daughters - he has a nasty misogynistic streak. I switch off these days if I hear or see him, he annoys me so much.

I can't bear his fake 'estuary English/man of the people' accent. He went to Ampleforth 😆

The only joy he has given me recently is not genuflecting enough to the TRAs, especially over Glinner (after his years of "TWAW and everyone who doesn't think so is a meany, but it's not something I want to discuss") and watching some of them frothing at him online.

ParadiseLaundry · 12/09/2025 10:01

JOB is a disingenuous twat.

i remember during the pandemic on his show he said he thought all people who chose not to get vaccinated should be ‘rounded up and made to live in a barracks somewhere away from everyone else’. Like a concentration camp, James?

snughugs · 12/09/2025 10:02

Oh yes the leftie that loves to tell everyone about his public school days.

Havesomecommonsense · 12/09/2025 10:05

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/09/2025 09:59

That’s his USP though - the way he interrupts and argues people down.

It’s basically an entertainment show in the end.

Often he says things I agree with (not on every topic but often) but being rude to callers is his whole selling point. I definitely wouldn’t try calling him up!

Oh right OK , I genuinely did not know this. I thought he was just a normal call in format host

He’s disingenuous and arrogant. Stopped listening to him years ago. He’s another overblown misogynist like Campbell and the spy guy.

ChestnutSquash · 12/09/2025 10:06

I like Tom Swabrick. He can present both sides of an argument and he keeps very calm, even when idiots are ranting at him.

James must have the patience of a saint dealing with the many idiots that call him.

Didn't hear it today so can't comment on this particular call

You get the he and his producers choose which callers get on the show, right?

He's the one choosing to spend his time debating with idiots.

He doesn't "debate" with what you call idiots, though. They are set up like Aunt Sallies for him to belittle in that smug way he has.

I only know this because sometimes I choose LBC instead of LBC News in the car, by mistake 😆 Two minutes of JO'B to see if he's got any less awful, then a quick switch over.

BTW, I can recommend the LBC News channel to anyone who likes to be kept up to date during the day. V neutral, and repeated every 20 mins. And no twats like JO'B.

BeardofHagrid · 12/09/2025 10:13

James O-Brien makes my skin crawl, he always sounds like such a creep when he does that fake stammering thing to sound humble 🥴

PiggyPigalle · 12/09/2025 10:15

The rudest presenter on LBC was David Lammy.
He didn't have the quick thinking or knowledge to counter a caller's opinion, so he would laugh.
Not a chuckle, he would roar with laughter that seemed to go on for ages.. Firstly to give him time, but also to disarm the caller.
He's not only thick, he's rude also. Neatest move Starmer made was grounding him.

Ramalam · 12/09/2025 10:42

I actually agree with his political leanings but he is pretty insufferable - his whole job is to disagree with people, so this is hardly surprising.

Maddy70 · 12/09/2025 11:00

I really like JOB. I like the way he dismantles someone's arguement by using their own words

SapphOhNo · 12/09/2025 11:20

I really like him.

I think he holds callers to account. People don't like being challenged and are often left to espouse nonsense on the emerging tv channels GB News and Talk TV.

I find people who talk about his tone or demeanour do so because they can't challenge his points.

But on this - there was nothing to challenge
He was saying ostensibly the right things but there definitely was a snide tone

anyway, he won't be someone I'm keen to watch again- just interesting to discuss

Can't abide him, he's so far up his own arse he needs a torch. I love LBC but switch off when he's on

I watched it too. Didn't pick up on that tone.

Really? I thought he was really crass saying more than once how CK got beaten by the Oxford students

I’ve been interested to observe the number of people who ‘don’t agree with charlie Kirk’s views at all’ who’ve spoken out about this but are silent on virtually every other occasion. For example the recent assassination of Melissa Hortman.

It interests me that some are so much more affected by the death of this white suoremacist who peddled lies and conspiracy theories.

I wonder why.

PiggyPigalle · 12/09/2025 11:49

Voices matter to me on radio too. I have the worst on right now, in my opinion. Now and again I mute her, for a rest. She is by all accounts very popular with most listeners.
She screeches like a seagull. Has a West Country, ooh arrrr accent and a speech impediment. She gets over excited, usually as Farage's fan girl, I worry my glass will shatter at her high pitch.
When she's relating something, she's like Violet Elizabeth Bott auditioning for the school play. Every word is over emphasised. She even attempts all the accents of the characters in her own inimitable squawk.
She's an ex Brexit Party MEP who along with many others, drifted to commercial radio and TV stations. Shame when they lost the gravy train, they didn't care enough to stand as MPs here.

I've been interested to observe the number of people who are criticising people for posting or talking about the death of Charlie Kirk when they didn't about other politicians who were killed, who also didn't post or talk about those politicians when they were killed.

I'm sure it's not hypocrisy. It must be something else.

RedRosie · 12/09/2025 11:54

I mostly agree with him, although sometimes he can be unnecessarily unkind.

I think he's mostly pointing up hypocrisy. Eg the right wing calling for vengeance over this murder, but encouraging the storming of the Capitol building - which involved many innocent people.

freshpyjamas · 12/09/2025 12:06

James OB is odious. The arrogance, distain and bully tactics he uses in what should be normal debate situations make it impossible for me to listen to him.
