Which job to go for?

Job 1- AO in DWP, £27.8k, stable, permanent and good benefits (can still apply for progression, though I know it's not easy in the CS)

Job 2- Team Leader for a private insurance firm managing a team of 5, 29.9k. Lower pension but still flexible and good maternity pay.

I can make the pay up in Job 1 with private tutoring, but #2 has line management experience which I've never had and could possibly benefit from. Also much higher bonus structure than CS.

Which would you do?

Advise the promotion/ step up management.

Also if job is mostly on computer and repetitive use opportunity to push new skills to the max and make good contacts in other departments. AI is coming.

I am civil service and I would say 1. I’ve not heard the best about DWP to be honest, but once in you can look to move.

Rainbowcat99 · 11/09/2025 19:08

I’d go for the one with line management experience. It sounds like you’d be developing more skills to help you to move on.

Job 2

flippityflip · 11/09/2025 19:13

I am civil service and would advise 2, don’t know DWP but if anything like my department you’d want out within a week and have lost out on the other job.

Theyllmakeafoolofyou · 11/09/2025 19:22

Hmm..everyone says 2. Worried about having less job security in the private sector.

1 for me , the extra pension will make up for the lower salary and I wouldn’t sign up to manage a team of 5 for that salary as my first line management experience - it can be very stressful. So many opportunities to advance in CS and supported training in related areas

coxesorangepippin · 11/09/2025 19:28

Job 1

Theyllmakeafoolofyou · 11/09/2025 19:30

Argh..don't know 😂
My plan is to just apply for as many EO jobs as i can, they've gone up to 32k now in DWP

Which way are we supposed to vote? Which button is 1, which is 2?

I'm leaning to 1. But that's because you mentioned maternity pay being a factor. Civil Service is great for mat pay and pensions..

MorningLarkEchoes · 11/09/2025 19:46

No way would I be willing to line manage 5 staff on under £30k.

Theyllmakeafoolofyou · 11/09/2025 20:24

My current manager line manages 14 staff for 30k 😂

Job 1. You can get flexi time and lots of good benefits from civil service compared to private company. Sick pay etc

Theyllmakeafoolofyou · 11/09/2025 20:45

Job 2 does have mat pay but not sure if it's as good as CS..

How old are you? How long are you planning to stay? Would the second job be your first line management experience and do you want to become a line manager? If you are fairly young, not planning to stay long and want to get some line management experience, go for #2 for a few years then you can decide if it's for you or not. I wouldn't stay long term though.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 12/09/2025 22:14

Job 2 for sure. I’d not work for DWP as an AO and expect to be able to easily progress/increase salary.

Well take 1 then. Do actually have offers on both?

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 13/09/2025 01:54

Personally I would take job 1 as £29.9K is ridiculous for a line manager. You should be on at least £35K even more for that responsibility
