To be a bit irritated by Gen Z/Y/whatever?

When did we all start saying Gen-whatever? I'm in my 40s and literally never use it. I never remember what Gen everyone is, or what their Gen behaviours and personalities are 'supposed' to be.

I've just read five threads, where posters have said something along the lines of, "Of course, I'm/he's/they're Gen Z/Alpha/whatever, sooo..."

AIBU to find it a bit irritating?

YANBU, I always have to Google which years they actually mean and then I wonder why they didn't just say so.

Also, I hate it when people say Gen 'Zee' instead of 'Zed', unless of course they're American.

Thedogscollar · 08/09/2025 23:35

It's lazy stereotyping. People are individuals no matter what age group or generation you supposedly belong to.

TaupeMember · 08/09/2025 23:39

If youre born at the very end or beginning of one 'gen', youre going to have more in common with someone from the 'gen' just before or after you, so on that alone its a load of codswallop.

Just another thing to divide us all through inane and meaningless ig reels etc

Yanbu

The generation who will pick
you up for stereotyping are seemingly in desperate need to stereotype themselves.

it’s tiring and boring and I can only assume it will improve when they have children and no more time to waste

ThreePears · 08/09/2025 23:51

I loathe it when people are stereotyped based solely on one particular characteristic, whether it be their age or anything else, especially when it is something over which they have no control.

BaskervilleOldFace · 09/09/2025 00:44

It's utterly stupid, on a level with star signs. It's mainly used by lazy newspaper journalists (the Guardian in particular loves generation-labelling), but then gets picked up by the sort of weird people who like to label themselves. Perhaps they feel safer if they imagine they are part of some big group?

Anyway if I was appointed dictator I'd ban it!

zaazaazoom · 09/09/2025 00:44

Its just stupid stereotyping. Unless of course you are talking about how cool Gen X are. If so crack on.

SweetBoraeline · 09/09/2025 00:47

I agree. It’s lazy stereotyping of people into homogenous masses who all act and think the same.

It’s the same as the stuff posted on here that all men are absolute bastards and perverts and all women are uniformly wonderful.

Simplistic nonsense.

This!

LoadOfOldShit · 09/09/2025 01:04

It is stupid and I think stems from jealousy that Gen X had the best music.

Crushed23 · 09/09/2025 01:41

Who’s talking about Gen Alpha? Aren’t they 0-15 years of age. What have they already done?!

PestoHoliday · 09/09/2025 01:45

Are you just bitter that Douglas Coupland didn't tell you your generation was cool?
