Should I feel upset over this comment

My daughter is moving to Uni soon, and me my partner/boyfriend and his daughter went out for a meal to celebrate and say goodbye.

He’s just phoned me on my way home from work, as he usually does, and I told him I was taking my daughter out for tea tonight (I’m tired and can’t be bothered cooking)

He commented and said “ooh you will get fat” which I replied “oh thanks for that” he then backtracked and said I mean your daughter, and said I look fine, I know he meant me, and he knows I try to loose weight, and it’s really upset me.

Am I been unreasonable too sensitive?

Surely youre livid that he called your daughter fat?

Rightandwrong · 04/09/2025 16:24

Well he either said it knowing it would upset you or because he is very stupid.
I would find it upsetting because it shows his total lack of sensitivity.

My daughter is tiny, I know he wasn’t meaning her! He said oh you will get fat and then when I complained he said that, if I thought he meant my daughter then obviously I would be

So he backtracked from calling you fat to calling your daughter fat. Yeah, I'd be pissed off too😡

AcquadiP · 04/09/2025 16:26

Tbf he did say "you will get fat" not that you are fat. IME it's something people say as a light hearted remark. I hear it too and I'm a size 10.

I wouldnt like him mentioning my daughter in that context girl, but otherwise I wouldnt take offense to him saying 'you might get fat'

Fair enough I think I’m been oversensitive, tired from work

Well then he needs to think more before he opens his mouth!

Zov · 04/09/2025 16:33

Fairly harmless comment really, that probably meant nothing, but YANBU to feel irked by it.

I used to get (when I was having lunch in the canteen at work, or a bite to eat in a local cafe) someone I knew marching up to me saying 'you'll get FAT!' Grin

It used to be a stock phrase for some people, usually people 15-20 years or more older. I was like Confused Like fuck off and let me eat. Hmm

arcticpandas · 04/09/2025 16:37

He said " you will get fat". Stupid comment but if he thought of you as fat I doubt he would have made it.🤷‍♀️

My DH can make stupid comments about food too. Like when I have a second pudding and he says "another one?" with fake astonishment. I'm slimmer than him so I tell him that "don't you wish you were me, being able to have 2 puddings without getting your tummy". That stops him. But it's still annoying. I never comment on what someone is eating unless it's my kids who are not eating enough/eating too much so they will get a stomach ache.

HoLeeFuk · 04/09/2025 16:37

"You will GET fat" isn't something you'd say to someone you thought was fat, or who you wanted to upset. He then realised you had taken it badly and panicked and said something stupid. Unless this is a pattern of behaviour I think you're being too sensitive.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/09/2025 16:50

I can't fathom saying that to anyone.

AnniesMother · 04/09/2025 17:29

My father in law says this sort of crap all the time. It’s misogynistic and boring
