AIBU to think this is controlling?

Was doing school uniform shopping with DD and another little girl was there she was about 7 ish and with her mother, she was getting her brownies uniform. She wanted the leggings or trouser option but I overheard the mum say “no you have to have the skirt because daddy doesn’t like trousers and leggings”. I was absolutely shocked because why does the dad (who wasn’t even there buying the uniform) dictate what she wears. The girl said how none of her friends wear the skirt but the mum kept saying how daddy doesn’t like trousers and leggings so she can’t get them.

AIBU to think this is really controlling? If DH said that to DD and would dictate what she can and can’t wear just because he “doesn’t like” something I’d go mental at him!

Parents say things but it doesn't make it true. Maybe it's mum that wants her to have the skirt and mum is using him so she doesn't look like the bad guy.

I doubt it. Literally all the girl would have to do is ask dad why she can't wear the leggings and the mother would be rumbled.

Gross regardless, she should be able to choose something like this, surely the leggings trouser option is much more practical for Brownies

PosiePetal · 03/09/2025 16:39

If it's true that Daddy doesn't like them, personally I would have told Daddy to get stuffed I wear what I like (and so does my daughter) a long time ago.

Dressing up girls for the male gaze is as old as time but still gross.

Daddy is a creep.

SeaAndStars · 03/09/2025 16:59

If daddy doesn't like trousers or leggings then he can bloody well go round in a skirt then.

That’s what I thought too much more practical at that age!

Unless the mum only wants her in skirts

Same I grew up with this and so do my DDs. If DH did this to DD (DD2 is a baby so has no say at this point) I would go nuts at him

This did make me cackle a bit! But so true.

How odd. The uniform literally doesn't have a skirt for brownies, it's a skort, so hopefully she was able to get something she wanted! It's very strange to not allow trousers or leggings and not at all suitable for British weather to insist on a skirt all the time. Very controlling!

Daddy is a creep.

You have serious issues.

Christmascaketime · 08/12/2025 23:41

Poor girl. All the others will be in leggings. They run around and play games most weeks.

Copperoliverbear · 08/12/2025 23:58

If it’s 100% true more fool the mother for allowing it, I’d much prefer my daughter in trousers doing activities ect

You have serious issues.

But the dad who insists his daughter can only wear skirts and never trousers doesn't have issues?

You have your priorities skewed.

Yeah, she has serious issues with a man who would insist that his daughter was only allowed to wear skirts. As any sane woman would!

Exactly!

My ultra religious PIL wouldn’t allow their DD to wear trousers or any form of what they considered to be male attire. Maybe it’s something to do with this?
