One group excluded from attending a meeting

I have seen a post about a workplace having an anti racist taskforce at work. I think anyone can join, it's about preventing racism etc.

They have recently meet to discuss Palestine and wrote Israelis/Jews only welcome to attend if they want to help the Palestine people. The post was very much about along the lines of stating what is happening is genocide and it's under the cover of Zionism and anti semitism.

I don't have an issue with what they are meeting about but it's I do feel uncomfortable they have stated Jews and Israelis can't attend unless they subscribe to that belief. I think they should have used "all colleagues welcome to attend if they fit the criteria".

I don't know, just feels like they are lumping people together. Aibu

Just in case I wasn't clear, usually they meet and don't announce on the company comms. Anyone can join the group but they don't state what is being discussed in that months topic.

I think it should say something like 'all staff welcome as long as they want to discuss helping the Palestinian people'.

Otherwise it does look like they're saying 'Jews are all Zionists who might want to talk about supporting bombing Palestine etc'.

They should be excluding everyone anti-palestine. Not just those of one faith or nationality.

Yes I have issues with them saying Israelis, who are also not always Jewish are excluded.
Not sure if breaking any laws

Yeah, that's true. It shouldn't say either really should it. Did you speak to HR or the person organising it?

hydriotaphia · 03/09/2025 12:31

Yes that wording is racist. It suggests that non-Israelis and non-Jews who do not support Palestine would be ok to attend, ie puts an additional limitation on Israelis and Jews.

Yes correct. Would you like a screen shot?

I states the meeting is open to anyone.... And lists criteria. I just think they could have left it at that.

Absolutely not. All the company can see this post. Not my hill to die on.

Fair enough.

What would that prove? I could mock that up easily enough.

C152 · 03/09/2025 13:41

If I worked at the organisation, I would feel the need to file a complaint/report the group for antisemitism.

MyNaicePlumBiscuit · 03/09/2025 15:12

That is blatantly racism. HR should definitely be aware.

Henryhall · 03/09/2025 15:20

Someone should point out to them and HR, anonymously if necessary, that they are being racist. I bet they are people who pride themselves on being "inclusive"! The HR people ought to warn them they should not do this.

They don’t actually want to "discuss Palestine" because they only want to talk about it to people who agree with them.

Ponderingwindow · 03/09/2025 15:28

You are correct that is racist. They should have stated the meeting focus and that anyone who wanted to temper or complicate that particular agenda should skip that month’s meeting.

They are not interested in having a complex discussion, hopefully they want to focus purely on humanitarian issues. Not every conversation needs to be about everything. Sometimes that is necessary in order to accomplish a goal.

Why would an anti racist task force in a company want to talk about helping Palestine? Surely their job is tackling racism in the company they work for. If they are discussing potential racism against Jews or Palestinians in their company (because of the current war) then Jews and Palestinians would be specifically wanted in the meeting I would have thought.

ExtraOnions · 03/09/2025 15:57

Absolute Horseshit .. no company, in the UK, would sanction this, as they know that they would get taken to the cleaners.
