New sport “friends”

I recently took up a new sport and really enjoy it. I met a few people there who took it up same time as me. One of them asked me to join them to play the sport and have dinner in different location. I was in two minds whether to do it or not as I am just a beginner and it was an expensive outing. But I decided to do it anyway in order to be friendly. Anyway I got there and the person who had invited me was already there with some others. She said that she had asked them to split us up rather than all together in same group. It then turned out they would all be in same group and I would be in different group. I ended up in group of experts who were all very nice but I felt awkward being a beginner. Then afterwards the others all went and ate together and ignored me. I ate with the group of ‘experts’ and left immediately afterwards. I was tempted to just ignore the new ‘friends’ but I don’t want any atmosphere as I will see them again at this sport. What would others think of this?

This was extremely rude of them. However I would continue the sport though

Yes definitely going to continue the sport. I will be very wary of them though.

Hi, do you have any updates on this? I'm struggling with a more or less similar situation

Hi, i have decided I absolutely love the sport. I have no contact with those ‘friends’ one of which was an absolute cheat! And i like playing it on my own or in competitions and will make an effort to meet other people. But i think the big thing for me is i love playing it on my own to improve. It’s obviously golf.

Shockingly rude. Did they need numbers? Say nothing, but be so wary going forward.
