Why is Facebook becoming X-rated?

purplepansyem · 25/08/2025 18:39

I've noticed over the past couple of months that the story boxes at the top of my Facebook page will show normal images and then for 3-4 days, will have really rude images on them, sometimes X-rated.

I asked my husband if he also gets this on his Facebook page and he said yes.

I then clicked on a couple of the groups I'm a member of last week and there were full on porn images on there! (I think they were hacked because other members were complaining)

I'm not a prude by any means and I know the minimum Facebook age is 18+ but I don't want to see this stuff!

AIBU to be annoyed about this, or should I just ignore it and keep scrolling.

Min age is actually 13. There shouldn't be any porn on there

LadyMars · 25/08/2025 18:43

It’s been happening for a while, apparently populated groups are bought for like farms, they then fill them with porn for the likes and engagement monetary gain.

gamerchick · 25/08/2025 18:43

The age limit is 13. The porn isn't from Facebook. It's bots or hackers. Just report it like you would on here.

I haven't seen any porn for ages. It's usually some poor buggers Facebook been taken over briefly and their friends list tagged.

HoskinsChoice · 25/08/2025 18:45

It's all about algorithms. I don't get this. There will be a reason why you do.

BarbaraVineFan · 25/08/2025 18:45

I haven’t had this, but does anyone else get really horrific AI- generated videos? I got one the other day which was of a grotesquely fat human/whale hybrid bobbing around in an aquarium. Even typing it has made me squirm- it was really disturbing and obviously created for that reason.

Yes, someone's looking at porn in your house.

That's just bullshit, and an attempt to stir up trouble

Gowlett · 25/08/2025 18:52

I find there’s pics of semi-clad women everywhere now.

Even the papers online, any excuse to show some T&A.
Never men… Unless they’re laughing at Leo’s Dad Bod.

Hate AI stuff… A lot of people comment, thinking it’s real.

No it’s not. On FB it’s a known thing, busy groups get taken over by dodgy groups - for example I was on a UFO enthusiast group that was taken over like this, now it’s all porn, and is flooded with grim men.

No it's not, I don't stir up trouble.

myplace · 25/08/2025 19:10

No, usually it’s algorithms but this is different. It’s in the reels at the top. A very weird clickbait image. I’ve only fallen a couple of times, and reported each time but it wasn’t triggering their systems so got through.

I’m currently working on ignore it and the algorithms will take it away.

myplace · 25/08/2025 19:11

And if you haven’t had it, you will soon. I’m squeaky clean and it’s on mine.

Is it though? This is not happening to me at all.

WallaceinAnderland · 25/08/2025 19:22

I've never had this. There is definitely someone under the IP address googling porn.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 25/08/2025 19:43

I've had it appear at the top in the reels box. I've just ignored. But it's gross.

MargaretThursday · 25/08/2025 19:44

I don't get this.
I am getting increasingly random group feeds though. Corrugated iron Appreciation Society anyone? Perhaps not as random as "Bathtubs in field", which dh had one time though.

However for the last fortnight I've had twice a day emails asking if I asked to change my password. I keep telling it that it isn't me, and the only solution it's offering is to take the need to authenticate it separately off, which seems the most stupid idea, because if someone and I can guess who wants to get into my account then giving a freer access is totally stupid.

It definitely doesn’t mean that at all ffs.

“Algorithms” and “googling porn” might make it more likely that pornographic pages you’ve never interacted with pop up, but what it doesn’t do is make a group that you follow/like which has existed for years, with a large user base interested in a particular topic (knitting, gardening, memes etc) suddenly start posting stories and pictures of practically naked women to everyone in the group out of nowhere. That isn’t how it works, but is what is happening a lot across Meta. The fact you haven’t seen it doesn’t automatically mean there’s a secret porn user in OP’s house.

PPs have explained it already. High engagement pages get either bought or hacked and post shit like this to farm interaction. Even people posting to complain and ask etc is going on is monetary gain for them.

DdraigGoch · 25/08/2025 20:13

I've been off of Facebook for a while, I got fed up of clickbait and scammers.

ScurryfungeSpuddle · 25/08/2025 20:28

I've noticed this lately too OP.

About 6 months ago I clicked follow on a recipes page.

Then for the last couple of weeks, there's been a reel at the top of the newsfeed, of a naked, dancing morbidly obese woman.

I wondered what it was doing there and just ignored it, until I realised it was the actual recipes page! I didn't want to open it but I had to, to click unfollow.

This was a few days ago and I've not seen it since thank goodness.

So as a PP said, the page was probably sold on once it gained a certain amount of likes.
