A driving / right of way thread

another driving thread.. Dark blue / purple are parked cars.

both are residential side roads not main roads / junction.

green car wants to turn left into ‘side street’ and red car is at the ‘junction’ wanting to go right.. both sides of the road are blocked with parked cars blocking one half of the road making it only passable for one car. Green car has more spaces available to back into as red car has back to back parking the length of the street (approx 100m)

who should back up?

Green car YABU
Red car YANBU

very bad diagram attached

Red car has been correctly proceeding, green needs to back up a few meters to let them out. I'm assuming green would have seen red heading down side road and indicating right and should have hung back.

crossedlines · 18/08/2025 21:54

green car is in the ‘correct’ position on the road, but red car has no choice in being the wrong side of the road…. I would say green car should reverse to where there’s room for red car to pass, to avoid red car having to reverse back down the whole street. I would apply the same rule here as when two cars meet on a single track lane. Whoever is closest to a passing space should reverse (unless it’s obviously very dangerous for them, such as if they had to reverse into a blind bend.)

MorrisonsPlatter · 18/08/2025 21:54

Gree car drives straight on and then reverses after green car has gone. Presuming no other cars are around.

MorrisonsPlatter · 18/08/2025 21:55

Sorry when red car has gone

myplace · 18/08/2025 21:59

This is no one’s fault, it just happens sometimes.

both cars should be looking for ways to resolve it.
Green could reverse. Red could pull out widely to the left allowing green to turn in and then red to go right.

The purple cars are badly parked, blocking the junction.

Bitzee · 18/08/2025 22:00

Neither one has done anything wrong by proceeding as they have but Green should back up since they have the closest and safest passing place. Red cannot reasonably reverse 100m and depending on busyness of the road is unlikely to make it that far before encountering traffic behind them which would then render the manoeuvre totally impossible.

Gree car drives straight on and then reverses after green car has gone. Presuming no other cars are around.

This is what I would have done (assuming you mean green reverses after red car has gone).

StJamesInfirmary · 18/08/2025 22:04

This is very similar to a junction near me. Green alway moves so that red can get out first. Incidentally - and this might be wrong - I've been told that there is no such thing as "right of way". It's always just what is the most sensible/reasonable move

Coconutter24 · 18/08/2025 22:12

Whoever can move out the way the easiest or safest should move.

WonderingWanda · 18/08/2025 22:16

Not sure there is a right of way for either car here really and it would make the most sense for the green car to reverse back. Let me guess, green car was being a dick about reveraing because the red car is on the wrong side of the road?

5foot5 · 18/08/2025 22:18

Is there any way for the green car to realise at that point how far red would have to reverse? Maybe they can't see around the corner and so don't know what a bugger it is for red

Best thing to do is for one or both drivers to get out of their car and actually talk to each other to agree a way out of the problem, but most drivers wouldn't dream of getting out!

Several options - in (a) Red makes the first move, in (b) (c) and (d) Green moves first.

a) If there is room, Red pulls to left in front of the parked cars and turns sharply right when Green has gone.

b) If insufficient room for (a), Green reverses far enough to allow Red to turn right and pull into a gap in the parked cars.

c) If the distance in (b) is too far or there are no suitable gaps, Green pulls forward about 2 car lengths allowing Red to go, then reverses 2 car lengths to make the turn (Red will be blocking any traffic coming up behind Green)

d) Green reverses 1 car length. Red makes the turn coming nose to nose with Green. Red then reverses 2 car lengths allowing Green to go.

hangerup · 19/08/2025 00:38

red car can move to left side of green could reverse a bit.

Aspidistree · 19/08/2025 01:20

Someone backs down and takes the road that is clear, i.e. either green gives up trying to turn left and goes straight on instead, or red gives up trying to right and turns left.

Either of them reversing with such little visibility is a bad idea, and while with the perfect information you've given I can see that it might make more logical sense for green to reverse, they may not have all that info to hand and reversing on a bigger road is more dangerous than doing so on a smaller road.

Safety always over insisting on going the exact way you want, even when blocked by another car.

StrokeRecovery25 · 19/08/2025 01:31

I usually manoeuvre because the vast majority of road users around here seem unwilling of unable to, so my route of least stress is for me to do it 🙅🏻‍♀️

MisAb · 19/08/2025 06:40

Id expect the red car to pull out wide, let the green car past and then red can continue proceeding.

Ifailed · 19/08/2025 07:10

Both cars should continuously sound their horns and gesticulate at the other driver aggressively.

That's what would happen round here anyway.
