To think Facebook has changed a lot since 2010?

I had my first Facebook account in 2010 - it was a ‘big’ account - lots of people I’d known from all different eras of my life. Loads of pics from all eras of my life etc etc
Virtually all my old work colleagues at that time accepted my friend request - I’d left work 6 months previously - in December 2009

Anyway - fast forward to 2020 and I opened a new account having closed my previous one in 2015.

About a month ago I sent friend requests and messages to around 15 of my old work colleagues - I left that job in 2021 - and only 1 accepted my friend request!!

AIBU to think that Facebook has really changed since 2010 and now people tend only to accept friends they’re very close to - they’re less likely to accept friends they knew ‘way back’ like they did in 2010?

Facebook is full of adverts and pointless rubbish. Very rarely is there a post from someone I know.

That’s EXACTLY what I was thinking today !

It would be surprising if it hadn't changed in 15 years wouldn't it? No social media stays static and longer standing users aren't being replaced by young people who now use different sites so FB use declines

Locutus2000 · 15/08/2025 18:47

It's a fucking cesspool these days, I don't stray outside of the few people I know directly.

TheNightingalesStarling · 15/08/2025 18:47

I remember when Facebook was only for university students and you needed a university email to set up your account!

Selfishshellfishies · 15/08/2025 18:48

I had my account in 2007. It started off actually as a place to keep old friendships going like that other site, FriendsReunited. I think around Brexit it became a really nasty place to be and caused a lot of damage to friends and society in general. Most people I know began only posting now and again from then on, maybe a yearly holiday or round up of pictures to keep friends in the loop. I actually was hacked some time around 2022 and couldn't get back on. I tried to sort out a new password, contact Meta etc but nothing worked. As a result I haven't been on it for about 3 years and from what I hear it's dead and just advertising, scams and political and sexist propaganda - which is where it was headed 3 years ago tbf.

SwedishEdith · 15/08/2025 18:48

It's completely unusable. I did a once daily speed scroll in case I miss anything I should be aware of. I wouldn't accept a friend request from someone I worked with 4 years ago though even when FB started.

Yes there’s a heck of a lot of advertising and today I’ve seen quite a lot of notices about these far right demonstrations coming up

Absolutely full of adverts. I think too greater awareness around privacy and consent has developed and many people having babies now don’t want to put them online. That’s a definite step forward from a few years ago. I know you still get the influencers who have no respect for their children’s privacy, but ordinary folk have better attitudes generally I think. I reckon Facebook has had its day.

Sugarfish · 15/08/2025 19:12

I don’t think many people use it much these days. Instagram took over and then TikTok. None of the people I work with under 30 have a Facebook account. It’s considered old fashioned to the younger ones now.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 15/08/2025 21:30

I'm only on there for the funny cat videos now. (And the dolls house pages I guess)

AutumnLover1989 · 15/08/2025 21:33

I use mine quite a lot still. Mainly to keep track of comic con guest announcements. My teen daughter has just set up an account. Still seems really busy. I can't get my head around Instagram and tik tok 😕

I literally never get notices about demonstrations, I get stationary and funny cats because the algorithm shows you things you will interact with. It has changed a lot since 2010, but that’s inevitable, it’s been 15 years!

bldy · 15/08/2025 21:36

Who even uses it anymore?

HouseHouseHouse7 · 15/08/2025 21:40

I liked it very much when I signed up in 2008. It was good to “see” people from school and know what they were up to.

These days it’s all ads and spam.

ah I was much later to the party than 2007 - didn’t start using it properly until 2010

I sometimes feel a bit nostalgic for the old Facebook and the old Twitter. There was a time there when they were both so entertaining. All lost Sad

It was launched in the UK at my university in 2005. I never joined as I thought it seemed shite, though I did not anticipate it unravelling the fabric of society.

TheOtherAgentJohnson · 15/08/2025 23:14

Double post

Elephantangel1991 · 15/08/2025 23:15

I only use it these days for community groups, local events, following local attractions to see what's on etc. Very very few posts by actual friends. Mostly just groups. Young people don't really use it. Haven't even added people I've met more recently.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/08/2025 23:33

Every update seems to make it progressively worse and less user-friendly.

I use it for groups and pages mainly.
It's lost its personal touch. Partly life stage, but partly lack of trust and more concern over professionalism.
