Anyone believe in this?

steff13 · 15/08/2025 16:48

My general position is that believing in things like Bigfoot is more fun than not believing in them.

DorothyWainwright · 15/08/2025 16:45

It would make sense that in the past there was a big foot style large ape that lived in mountains. I think they were there once but are long extinct.

Motion cameras would have snapped one if they were around, they snap mountain leopards and we barely see them.

Why would it make sense though? I’m not disrespecting you, I just want to understand why you would think that.

Yes, that does make sense.

We sued to have mammoths and they're long gone too.
Although I've just realised we'd have found skeletons if a mountain ape existed.
Can you tell I'm not David Attenborough 😁.

Ha! I don’t like David Attenborough so you’re in good company.

Please say more!

My then best friend and I were walking through fields near to where we lived. We were both 13 years old. We'd just been wandering around doing nothing very much (it was summer school holidays). Suddenly we saw a little "man", about 18 inches tall sort of dressed in leaves. He looked like a small human. His skin was brown but not hairy and he was standing upright. He looked at us for a few seconds, and we of course at him. We were about 10 feet away from him, so quite near. Then he started to run towards the nearest tree that had an entrance/hollow at the bottom and he disappeared. Once we'd composed ourselves, we compared notes as to what we'd seen and we both agreed. We were both country girls, so very used to seeing all sorts of creatures. We'd never seen anything like this before, nor since.

HauntedBungalow · 15/08/2025 17:07

Isn't Bigfoot a version of the Missing Link? If so I'm pretty sure I went out with him for a bit, in the 90s.

That’s mind blowing.

Do you think you’d have been able to capture footage if it had happened in these days? I mean, as mentioned up thread where it’s always fuzzy photos.

I think so. There's no harm in believing in things like that. Now, if you're quitting your job and uprooting your family so that you go can go on a hunt for Bigfoot, that might be the time to take a step back. But just believing that it might be out there somewhere doesn't harm anything.

I imagine so, although we were both frozen to the spot to be honest. This was the summer of 1970 so no devices then! I guess young people are so "at one" with their phones these days that perhaps taking a video would have been our first thought. As it was, we just stood there in silence for about a minute trying to process it. I'm still in touch with Liz (the friend) and we're still both utterly convinced of what we saw. I certainly wish we had some evidence.

AgentPidge · 15/08/2025 17:27

There was something a while back about the yeti - from hair samples etc they summised that it does exist and is a cross between a polar bear and some other sort ( brown bear?). So similar situation here?

jessycake · 15/08/2025 17:27

No I don’t but I desperately want them to be real

Have you had any strange experiences since?

It’s good that you’re still in contact with your friend isn’t it. It would be quite isolating to experience that with no one to share it with.

Yeah, the supposed ‘proof’ footage was later admitted to be fake.

I’m just curious as to why so many people want to believe something supernatural exists really.

I think our world is brilliant enough without some imaginary being. I’m talking about nature though, people not so much.

Yes, and also some people get a huge thrill out of hoaxing us.

There are some species which have only recently been discovered (usually in places like Borneo or Sumatra) but they tend to be beetles or very tiny things!

And, as with Nessie, if these large apes existed we’d surely occasionally find a dead one, or a skeleton in the forest.

There’s quite a few people on you tube and some of the ‘evidence’ is merely made by a bear or deer.

Have a listen to the R4 podcast Yeti.

jeaux90 · 15/08/2025 17:36

My very rational American brother in law definitely believes it. He thinks there is too much evidence.

Oh, I so agree about being able to share the experience. I've only ever told a couple of other people over the last 55 years and not suprisingly received "funny looks". Now in a moment of madness I've told everyone on Mumsnet. Must be the heat getting to me! Yes, I did have one other very strange experience 15 years ago that was actually rather disturbing, to the extent that I really don't want to tell anyone because it raises questions and, quite frankly, still scares me.

Ah, I’m sorry. Thank you for being brave enough to share your experience though, it would have terrified me. I can’t imagine how awful it would have been without your friend.
