To be really lazy on holiday

Away at the moment with dh and kids. Package, AI deal on Greek island. We’re on day 4 and so far have only really spent time in the hotel and been to the beach a few times. There’s loads going on in the hotel, lots of pool games and kids clubs so both kids have been kept occupied. Eldest has made a couple of friends which has helped.

But I can’t help feeling a bit guilty that we’ve come all this way and literally been in the hotel, to the beach and to the shop across the road! I’ve asked Dh and eldest dc if they’d like to do an excursion but neither seem bothered and it’s so hot (late 30s today) so I don’t fancy mooching for the sake of mooching. If it were just Dh and I then I’d probably do more. And on family holidays in the past we’ve visited local towns and things like that. But this time I just think we’ve been super lazy and it feels a bit of a waste.

We’re all happy, fed, napping when we want and enjoying ourselves so maybe I’m overthinking. We’ve got a lot of hotel arranged activities for the next few days and then it’ll soon be time for home. Aibu to be enjoying seeing bugger all but the pool, beach and AI buffet?

YANBU. You can do what you want with your holiday!

In that heat, I wouldn't do anything either, and I'm a super active person.

It’s your holiday, don’t feel guilty for using your time to relax and enjoy time as a family.

Sounds brilliant to me. If your kids are happy and not complaining of boredom then it ain't broke so don't try to fix it.

We only do AI because I think that is a proper holiday. We also do only really great places with tons of restaurants and excellent kids club . I have zero interest in the local culture and attractions so we don’t go exploring and I don’t find that relaxing. City holidays are different though. So if we do AI, then we relax and stay at the resort. So yanbu!

If everyone is happy, what's the problem? Holidays can be for relaxing too! Especially in that level of heat.

I remember a trip to the south of France in 2022 when it was 40 degrees every day. We spent a good 10 hours a day by the pool. It was too hot to do anything else. Just enjoy the slower pace and being able to nap whenever you want to. 😊

We did 2 weeks in Gran Canaria at the start of the school holidays and literally didn't leave the hotel compound between transfer coaches to and from the airport. DD(6) made lots of friends, really enjoyed the kids club and all the family focused entertainment and so DH and I also felt like we had a proper holiday too.

We've already booked the same hotel for next year because what all of us need after a school year is to chill out and relax properly. We have decided that we'll do a couple of trips next year though but only a couple of half days.

I'd be so bored. But i never do AI for that reason. We're all different

Tagyoureit · 13/08/2025 22:48

No, i wouldnt feel guilty about not dragging kids from fun activities and newly found friends just to be seen to be doing more in nearly 40 degrees heat, surely thats more mean?
