To think marriage is less about romance now and more about financial security?

People dress it up as “true love” but underneath it all, isn’t marriage today mostly about stability, mortgages, and financial safety nets?

This exact topic has been running on another thread. Marriage has always been primarily about money and financial stability. And also protecting inheritance and controlling women.

The idea that you should even like your spouse, let alone romantically love them is a very modern concept.
For most of human history most people had little to no choice about who they married.

Even today I would argue that for most people in most marriages romance is at best a secondary purpose.

I think it was the case in the past but maybe there was a blip over the last few decades where it became less important. Now it’s important again because otherwise home ownership & dc may be out of reach financially.

Compared with when ?.

Marriage was traditionally about a union between two men: the bride’s father and the groom’s father. The financial consequences flow from that.

Well, if that’s the case then DH has been short changed 😂
