School Trip V Holiday (For DC)

DCs school do a France trip every year for Y8s. It’s in November and a week (leave Sunday come back Saturday). DC1 did it last year and said it was a complete waste of time as there was no opportunity for anyone to speak French as the teachers constantly intervened! They didn’t go to any of the gallery’s or museums or anything that we had expected and basically just wondered around Paris for a five days!

Now, here’s my problem. DC2 gets horribly coach sick. Nothing works. Last years trip to France was in the Eurostar but apparently it’s too expensive this time so it’s the coach. So in my eyes it’s the combination of the waste of time/money and an awfully long coach journey for DC2. We’ve already paid a deposit which is non-refundable (this was before the coach fiasco emerged).

DH and I already have a holiday booked for that week and In-laws were going to look after DC1.

DH thinks DC2 stays with in-laws with sibling and goes to school. Even though we all know no work will be done that week as only two students out of thirty will be there (of which DC2 is one)!

I think DC1 and DC2 should be mysteriously sick and come away with us. I have zero concerns about their grades and it’s not like DC2 will miss anything anyway. Obviously I cannot take DC2 away and leave DC1.

YABU - DC2 goes to school, with only one child for company and learns nothing for a week. DH and I have holiday and relax.

YANBU - Take DC on the holiday (in the UK) with and have a blast and enjoy the fact DC still want to spend time with us.

I would take them both with you and let them have a "mysterious illness" as long as you can trust them to keep quiet about it

I'm confused (sorry), you said it's Y8, so presumably both of your children are in secondary.
How can there only be 2 Y8s left in the school? Surely there would be plenty of other children not going on a French residential?

The WHOLE of year 8 bar 2 are going to France?

I voted YANBU with a couple of caveats: is DS1 doing mocks that week?

Was your DH looking forward to some grown-up time and this will stretch the elastic of your relationship?
