New kitten, not eating.

We had no idea what we were doing and just followed the breeder. Our kitten isn’t eating any of the food on offer. I’ve seen a few advertised. Untamed which I think I’m going for. Any advice?

How old is the kitten? How long since you brought the kitten home? It may just be feeling overwhelmed, try leaving the food somewhere quiet where the kitten can eat without anyone being around, it can take a while for them to settle in and feel safe in a new place.

I would hide the food somewhere private ish and stay away. My adult cats, even, hate to be watched eating

Will try this. He’s 13 weeks. We’ve had him 5 and it’s only now become an issue.

Not all cats like an audience (although I do have one who prefers to be watched) as kittens my cats liked to eat when we weren't watching

My kitten was like this. Wouldn’t eat cat food but tried to get your food off your plate and eat that. Especially toast! Tried him with tuna and he ate that. So mixed a little bit of wet cat food into tuna and he ate it, over the next week started adding more cat food and reducing tuna until he was eating pure cat food. He’s still fussy now and won’t touch dried cat food but loves his felix pouches.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 08/08/2025 20:33

Is he drinking? I'd worry about dehydration, it doesn't take long for that to be an issue when they are little.

You’ve described him! So I’ve done exactly what you said. He’s eating! Thankyou.

If you’ve had him 5 weeks I’d be worried about him stopping eating. Is he putting on weight or can you feel his bones a bit? Any diarrhoea?

Thankyou. I was getting to that point. But he has just eaten a tuna and wet food mix. I’ve read a few things which makes me think he’s filling up on the jelly and leaving the meat, hence why I mentioned untamed.

The jelly in the food is there to provide moisture as a lot of cats don't drink much. They also like to have running water, we have a fountain for ours.

I was told it has all the sweeteners in it which is why cats tend to eat it and leave the meat?

Clean dish this morning! Thankyou again. I kept looking online and had loads of different subscriptions thrown at me. I’ve played it down but I was getting worried.

Slight derail but I was always under the impression that cats couldn't taste suger?

AwkwardPaws27 · 09/08/2025 13:38

My cats have Untamed wet food (for dinner; they have Orijen dry food for breakfast) and it seems very good - empty bowls every time, & doesn't make BoyCat stinky like many other foods we tried! GirlCat is nearly 15 & vet was impressed by her condition & coat at recent vaccine appointment so I'm going to continue with it.

I'm glad he's eating now. My cats have Untamed and love it
