To think therapy-speak has ruined normal conversations?

Everything now gets framed as “toxic”/“boundaries”/“trauma.” Useful words, yes, but AIBU to think therapy-speak has made normal disagreements sound like diagnoses?

Unsure tbh.

Random three words is annoying as fuck either way

The people I converse with in real life don't use therapy speak. I do see it a lot online, though, and it makes me immediately want to tune out, stop the video, or close the window. I find it obnoxious and have no patience for it. No problem with people having and asserting their boundaries, but how often do we actually need to talk about them, and don't get me started on 'toxic' and 'trauma'.

ds 2 talks like this sometimes , occasionally it is ‘ autonomy ‘ that is thrown around and boundaries.
He is a millennial though..

You’re spending too much time online, get out and have normal conversations. Nobody I talk with talks like that and I have young adults who have had/ are having therapy!

That’s not ‘therapy speak’, it’s pop psychology. I’ve had a lot of therapy and I’m not sure the terms ‘toxic’ or ‘boundaries’ have ever been used.

Trauma, on the other thing, is actually real, or don’t you think that being raped aged ten is traumatic? Would you prefer a different word?

Being "empowered" is something I've heard recently and "being triggered".

Both really irritating. All a bit Tick-tocky.

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 06/08/2025 18:46

If people are saying I have trauma, etc etc and seeking ways to help themselves, that's informative and a good thing but if people are saying the same then sitting back expecting constant sympathy and others tip toeing around them, then it's not a good thing.

My old boss in the 80s loved the word ‘ empowered ‘ or ‘ empowerment ‘ before her time clearly..
I asked ds 2 if he wanted some salad with his burger and he said ‘ sure’ ! It made me laugh , just the way he says it as if his at work ! Lol
