Any northerners know Whitby?

Wrong place to post but I’ve booked to go to Saltmoore hotel in Whitby this coming weekend. Can anyone recommend a great seafood place in Whitby that serves oysters, lobster etc. Never had oysters and a great seafood restaurant is on my bucket list so I would love somewhere great to go

Hi there, yes I know Whitby.

The Marine is probably your best bet but no oysters in August, you will have to wait until September.

Ooh, I have my eye on the Saltmoore, but it's a bit spendy for me.

I don't know if they have oysters and lobsters, but the Fish Cottage at Sandsend is a posh fish and chip shop where you can dine in and they do have other seafood as well as normal fish and chips.

I would go there. Twice in fact, once for fish and chips and also for 'seafood'. You can walk some of the way from Saltmoore on a public footpath through the woods or turn left along the seafront.

Ahh thank you. That’s such a shame I was really looking forward to trying them. I’ve only ever been to Whitby as a child so I’m looking forward to a northern seaside break.

Make sure you book somewhere, it's Whitby regatta this weekend and it will be absolutely rammed.

Bjorkdidit · 06/08/2025 08:59

There is lobster on the fish cottage menu, and pictures of oysters but I suspect they'll feature on the specials board when they have them, but likely seasonal and what catch their supplier has.

Another vote for the Fish Cottage. Definitely recommend booking though

Fish cottage.
And agree Whitby will be rammed ,( but then it always is!)
Sandsend is lovely and probably no need to actually go into Whitby if you don't have to!

I had a terrible meal at Fish Cottage, highly recommend Esbeck House, regularly in whitby as husband was born there, the magpie is also worth a visit.

I also recommend if you visit the Abbey taking time to watching the fabulous Dracula play. It's on in the summer there are three actors and it is fab. Dracula once told my grandson to 'move' as he was in his way we still laugh about it.
