I’ve messed up! Holiday related

We are going to playa montroig eurocamp in Spain and had paid for car hire from Barcelona airport. I’ve had an email saying that my booking was paid for by debit card but to “remind me” that the deposit needed is 1500 euros on credit card. I don’t have a credit card with a limit of this much. I didn’t know this when booking and it’s only a little car nothing fancy! We go next weekend so no time to get another credit card. They said they’ll only accept one credit card anyway.
What do others do? I can’t imagine many people have this just available?! Aargh!

Do you have a credit card at all? Can you increase the limit on the one you have? If not if you apply for a CC today it could be with you before the weekend.

Thank you. I have 2 credit cards with £1000 limit each but they will not accept payment over two cards. Due to a previously bad credit rating that I’ve been building up I cannot increase this at the moment 😢

Phone them up and ask what to do. Will they accept a debit card with that amount as a deposit for example.

Magnificentkitteh · 04/08/2025 17:50

They will sometimes accept a debit card if you have enough in the account but they will block the funds so you do need enough spare. If not, I'd be applying for a card asap or trying to cancel the booking and rebooking with someone else that will accept this. I had similar last year and the new card arrived quickly but I was eligible

Ask them if you can do €1000 credit card , €500 cash if you can get it ? Look at other rentals and see if you can book another one .

GoatGoatGoat · 04/08/2025 18:13

Can you cancel your current booking and re-book with a different company that charges a smaller credit card deposit?

JudithOnHolidayAgain · 04/08/2025 18:18

Can you transfer money onto your credit card?

For example

If you have £800 credit available on your card you would need to pay an extra £700 in and then you would have £1500 available on your card.

Sometimes if you go for the premium insurance option on the booking, they will reduce the damage deposit required.

Wise will create you an online account and give you virtual cards instantly

We were given the option (car hire in Spain last week) to put a deposit of £1500 down on a credit card, or to take out the full damage waiver at a cost of about £150. Give them a call and see if they’ll let you do that.

Are there any third party insurance companies they will accept? We bought a policy a couple of years ago which meant you didn’t need to leave a large deposit on a credit card
