How often do you put suncream on?

I'm fed up of slathering spf 50 on my face, neck and hands every few hours even when it's dull outside, having to go into the loos at work to do it and getting weird looks.
Maybe I'm applying it excessively?

When it’s sunny and hot and I’m sitting in my garden. Don’t bother any other time

rubyslippers · 03/08/2025 12:26

I wear SPF on my face and neck every day - once per day
unless I am out in hot sun with high UV wouldn’t reapply
if you’re sitting in an office or driving for much of the day why do you need to re apply?

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 03/08/2025 12:26

I work outdoors so every couple of hours on exposed skin, unless it's the middle of winter. I wouldn't bother otherwise.

Zoraflora · 03/08/2025 12:27

Spf before make up in the morning doesnt get re applied, thats every day, all year round.
If its a hot day and Im outdoors I would apply to any exposed areas and reapply every few hours.

FourEyesGood · 03/08/2025 12:28

I’m pale and don’t feel the need to keep reapplying throughout the day - just once in the morning after my shower. If it’s really sunny and I’m outside all day, I’ll put more on after a few hours, but I tend to avoid being out in harsh sunlight for hours on end.

If it’s cloudy or dull, I don’t bother with it except on my face.

Misophoniaistough · 03/08/2025 12:33

I think I've been reading too many scaremongering articles about how it should be applied daily, even if you're indoors, and reapplied every few hours..

TomatoSandwiches · 03/08/2025 12:41

If you are going to be in your house for the whole day then it's unnecessary.
If you are going out, to work or for leisure and will be sitting near a window in the car or office then I would apply after my morning shower.
If it is a very clear and sunny day even if it's not hot I would reapply as directed by your personal suncream.

Childrenare4life · 03/08/2025 12:42

I rarely use it now despite being a red head. There's a lot of research into how it's not actually good for you and can in fact cause cancer.

JaneyMayJaneyMay · 03/08/2025 12:42

I apply SPF on my face and neck every morning regardless of the weather or where I’m going, but will only reapply if I’m going outside for a long time (eg park/picnic/walk) and reapply every few hours after.

Can we have a link to that research please.

muddyford · 03/08/2025 12:43

Every morning before I take dogs out. Then lunchtime if I'm outside.

mynameiscalypso · 03/08/2025 12:44

I apply SPF50 under my make up. If I’m outside, I will use an over-makeup SPF spray to top up during the day but I don’t bother if I’m just at home or in the office.

YourSpryWriter · 03/08/2025 12:45

We use all day and have never had a problem with burning.

Fucks sake. Stick some tin foil on your head too.

Factor 50 when outside all day re apply a couple times and every time I've got out of pool once dried.

Yeah, good luck with that.

ConcernedOfClapham · 03/08/2025 12:55

I never have used it.

Why are you putting it on so often? 🤔

PluckyChancer · 03/08/2025 12:56

I don’t own any suncream. I only wear moisturiser on my face when I remember and I’m 60.
I’m in Ireland so I don’t tend to see much sunshine. 😆

Are you sitting INDOORS but going to the toilets at work to reapply sun cream?

If so, are you ok?

Yes because I sit by large windows and apparently you can still get sun damage

Rather rude.

Because someone has a difference of opinion it doesn't give you the right to be insulting. Don't agree with what I said then just scroll on.

Its not an opinion. Its not based on facts. This "research" doesn't exist.
Yes I was rude but no one should be buying into the shit they spouted.

BopItWinner · 03/08/2025 13:07

It depends how much I’m outside. Once or twice a day usually in sunny weather.

If I’m indoors, I don’t use it. In winter I don’t use a separate one but I think my foundation has an spf in, although I’ve heard those won’t provide much protection due to the small amount used.

I’m fairly pale, never burn using what I do (spf 30) and have good skin in my mid 40s.

Finteq · 03/08/2025 13:09

In the UK.

Only if very hot on my kids when going to school.

I never wear it.

Abroad when on holiday. Usually in the morning. Then reapply around 12pm. And then again around 2-3 pm first couple of days of holiday after that just twice a day. I don't use it. But I don't generally go in the sun. And sit under the parasol.

We are South Asian

My sister only applies it once on her kid when abroad- first thing in the morning.

SmegFridge · 03/08/2025 13:10

I'd also be interested in this research on suncream causing cancer. I've seen it on MN a few times now and have yet to see any scientific evidence.

Personally I stick factor 50 on my face and neck in the morning and do my arms and legs if I know I'll be spending lots of time outside. Not a huge hassle.

DappledThings · 03/08/2025 13:11

Not as often as I should. Forgot any today and it is hot and sunny but we aren't out all day.

Never heard of staying indoors and putting it on. That's a new level of paranoia.
