I'm too agreeable and need to change

Because people like me but maybe don't respect me I think.
I see it in work, I work in customer care and deal with technical support on the phone.

Customers ring for updates about their problems and I try say stuff like, I'll get this escalated for you, I apologise for the wait, I'll note on file you've called.

The person next to me on another will say. "There's no update. You'll just have to wait."
You could argue that my response shows better soft skills but sometimes I think I just need to be firmer.

I used to have a lecturer at uni and she reminded me a lot of me. If someone got an answer wrong she'd use softeners like, I can see why you said that, you were almost there,..

I don't actually think people appreciate this. It's not that I'm not honest, I am just too gentle sometimes. Anyone else feel like this?

You sound like a better employee than your colleague so I wouldn't change at work unless you are literally giving others much more run around work to do and they can't cope.

Your lecturer sounds encouraging and correcting which is exactly what they should be.

Wishy washy people are very annoying it's true but only if it's at decision making time like when your trying to book a restaurant and that one friend never ever gives any ideas on what area to go or what type of food to eat or what time to meet etc etc..

Nope, don’t change the way you are unless you feel people are taking advantage of you. You sound lovely, it’s not a bad quality to be helpful, friendly and nice. More people will appreciate this than you realise.
