To ask who was rude?

In a shop just now looking at walking shoes. I was mid conversation with the sales assistant discussing waterproofing etc of shoes. Another customer butts in and asks if a different shoe is waterproof. Fair enough if she only wanted to ask a quick question. But she then proceeded to launch into a full on conversation, asking about sizes and generally ignoring the fact that we were there. I said, perfectly politely I think, ‘excuse me but we were being served first’. She then launched into a tirade of abuse calling me rude etc. Poor young girl serving us didn’t really know how to handle the situation but did turn back to us and carried on serving us. The other woman then called me rude again and said she would have just walked out but it wasn’t fair on the shop assistant as she had done nothing wrong…. I am sure I wasn’t in the wrong but it has made me question myself a bit! I was first! She walked into the shop after me. Was I unreasonable to call her out though?!

YANBU. She was rude and pushy and needs to learn to wait her turn, she isn't the main character.

VaseofViolets · 31/07/2025 13:47

YANBU. How rude. Why are people so incapable of having a bit of patience and waiting for their turn? It’s not difficult.

The sales assistant needs some training in how to deal with difficult customers

RimTimTagiDim · 31/07/2025 14:02

She was rude unless you were taking up an inordinate amount of time and there was a queue waiting to speak to the assistant.

Isittimeformynapyet · 31/07/2025 14:05

You weren't rude. It's easy to think of what to say after the event, but I think "I don't mind you asking a quick question, but if you want to go into more detail you'll have to wait until we've finished" would have explained your position perfectly. You really have to spell things out for morons.

PluckyChancer · 31/07/2025 14:09

I’d have just laughed in her face when she accused me of being rude. 😂

She’s obviously used to bullying her way through life and gets aggressive when others don’t immediately know tow to her demands. Silly woman. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That is literally what I said initially more or less word for word. Then she told me I was rude….

Ah ok. I thought that's just what you were saying to us.

Yeah, she was rude. Don't worry anymore.

SophieJo · 31/07/2025 14:14

If she had just asked the one quick question fair enough but not to continue the conversation. You were quite within your rights to tell her.

itsgettingweird · 31/07/2025 14:41

The entitlement of people nowadays never ceases to amaze me.

Of course Yanbu.

id be interested in the 1% who voted you were though!

This. I cant stand people like this. Entitled self absorbed idiots

FreddysFingers · 31/07/2025 15:04

No, she was rude, you weren't rude.

YANBU.

CoffeeCantata · 31/07/2025 15:32

I'd say the other customer wasn't only rude, but lacked the most basic self-awareness and intelligence.

Try not to let it bother you, OP. I was attacked (verbally!) by a random person in a bank queue last week. The staff had to intervene! This person just went for me because, apparently, I was standing in the wrong place (I'd been asked to wait there by a staff member). What it was to her, I will never know, but hey!

They walk among us...

mondaytosunday · 31/07/2025 15:34

Yea the sales assist ant needs better training. She should have answered quickly then said she would help her once she had finished with you.

Thedogscollar · 31/07/2025 15:39

You were not rude at all. The great British public never fail to disappoint me in their sense of entitlement.
