That YouTube has overtaken ITV?

Read in the papers today that YouTube has overtaken ITV in the viewing figures.

I must say I’m surprised by this - I remember a time when there were only 3 channels etc ..

I watched a couple of things on ITVx recently, I don't watch YouTube much as it is too addy and I wouldn't want to fork out another £12 a month so it was watchable

I do watch Itv player, there are some good box sets to watch and I watch classic Corrie every day as well, have recently ditched modern Corrie as it now a cross between Crossroads and The Bill, it’s utterly dire. I also use BBC iPlayer and YouTube, I absolutely love YouTube and pay for premium, worth every penny for no adverts.

Traditional TV is living on borrowed time. It’s over. It’s about streaming services, on-demand. The only programmes I watch at the time they’re broadcast are live sport.

Me and my partner watch YouTube all the time.

we’re into vlogs on travel ect.

I don’t remember the last time i watched ‘normal’ telly.

ITV has always been a bit crap with a few good things. Now it’s all super crap with very few good things. A few
times a year we might watch an okay drama on there.
25 years ago we watched on a Saturday night we would watch early xfactor, they basically haven’t moved on.
No way would I ever pay for it. Amazing that it’s the channel that once produced Poirot.

My PIL used to have it on day and night, used to drive me bananas.

I watch some BBC, some live and also iPlayer, but a lot of youtube which is mainly content that I wouldn't find on TV
I can't remember when I last conciously watched ITV or Channel 5. The last series I followed on C4 was the first few series of The Handmaid's Tale, so that's pre-2020.

Whenever I pass over ITV, it seems to be quiz shows, sleb stuff, soaps or gritty drama, none of which I've watched in the last 20+ years.

DS2 does watch selected series with me; Race Across the World, Gladiators, Traitors and The Apprentice. He quite likes the suspense of a weekly show compared to the instant gratification of a binge.

Got rid of TV licence around seven years ago now. Definitely don't miss it.

Apart from Only Connect, there is nothing we watch on TV.

Cannot say I am surprised in the slightest.

The formats of lots of ITV shows are very dated, following the same formulas with the same presenters. It shows a lack of diversity in the commissioning, casting, creative and production space. All soaps are similar, documentaries similar, cop shows etc etc. You can tell the team behind the scenes is small with groupthink.

They could get away with it when there were 3 channels but not now, they must evolve or die.

YouTube however, is far more meritocratic and thus the diversity of shows is massive. There’s a lot of dross but much more creativity and diversity of stories, content and presenters with smaller budgets.

BBC tv will go the same way if they don’t open up the behind the camera roles to those outside the Footlights, Oxbridge crew. Same old panel shows, 5th new version of Pride and Prejudice etc. Boring. There are so many other stories to tell.

Not surprised, ITV is full of celeb/quiz/crime rubbish. I watch loads of BBC and channel 4 like a previous poster (I like history, factual, culture) but there's nothing on YouTube that takes my interest, wouldn't know where to start tbh (though DP only watches YouTube, no TV...).
I'm convinced 90% of all visual output is crime based, or superhero franchise and I'M NOT INTERESTED 🤣
