Should I own up to this?

Our street WhatsApp group has been active today discussing strange noises in the street around midnight.

Then someone said they heard a piercing woman's scream just before dawn too. Others said they think they might have heard it too.

It was me. I'm the screamer. I have night terrors. I had one last night and had the windows open. I'm quite new to the area and me and DP don't quite fit the area😂

If I own up, I risk cementing myself as the neighbourhood loon. But keeping quiet feels in some way deceptive! Bloody hell. WWYD?

Oh God😂 I think whether I would own up or not depends on the neighbours! If it was me now then I’d own up, we all get along really well with the neighbours so I sort of know how it would be received and it would be fine. Not sure I’d do the same if I was new though!

ToKittyornottoKitty · 29/07/2025 14:23

Reallllllly thought this was about sex noises until you said night terrors. I’d keep quiet! Let them think what they want

gamerchick · 29/07/2025 14:25

I wouldn't. You'll start getting grief if it happens again or genuine screams might go ignored. Let it go

IamnotSethRogan · 29/07/2025 14:26

I wouldn't own up publicly online it's not really anyone's business.

Maybe mention it to any neighbours who are close by you if you get friendly so they dont think you're being murdered.

9/10 times people aren't posting asking "what was that noise" online because they're concerned, usually just nosey!

Comedycook · 29/07/2025 14:27

I'd ignore and say nothing...but I'd have never joined the street WhatsApp in the first place...shudder

ForeveraBluebird · 29/07/2025 14:29

My Neighbour was out the front with a torch in the early hours this morning, had to go and tell her it was Tawny Owls making the noise .

ThisPithyJoker · 29/07/2025 14:29

If you know it was you and no one is at risk, I'd go for 'oh, mating foxes are a nightmare - they sound soooo much like a screaming woman' unless, of course, you spoke. It would be hard to claim it was foxes if you were screaming 'no, Reginald, no I will not feed your terrapins, last time they ate my hands' or something...

Hotflushesandchilblains · 29/07/2025 14:35

I am usually all about honesty but in this case, I would be keeping quiet.

NewNewForest · 29/07/2025 14:37

“My husband heard it too, but I was fast asleep. Maybe it was a shouty bird”

🤷‍♀️

MxDaisy · 29/07/2025 14:37

It was definitely me 🙈
I don't think I shouted any words, just a ridiculous scream.

Keep your windows closed if you’re regularly waking the entire neighbourhood.

Barnbrack · 29/07/2025 14:42

Keep your windows closed if you’re regularly waking the entire neighbourhood.

I agree with this! Did you actually murder someone last night though and are checking how likely people are k believe your excuse?

Autumnpug · 29/07/2025 14:43

It's foxes definitely
Just make out you saw one walking past

Comedycook · 29/07/2025 14:47

I also think most people don't genuinely care...they just like gossiping

MxDaisy · 29/07/2025 14:49

I'd over-heat in this weather with the windows closed 🥵 Screaming isn't a particularly regular occurrence thankfully.

Oh no, I think our neighbours genuinely do "care".

Not so much about the fate of the screaming woman, more about the potential wrong 'uns that might be associated with the screaming woman.

Omg poor thing! I agree with the PPs. Don't say a thing!!! It's not like you did it on purpose! Low profile all the way x

purplecorkheart · 29/07/2025 14:54

I would not own up but I certainly would look in alternative methods of cooling room down than keeping the window open.

MxDaisy · 29/07/2025 14:54

I'm just going to keep quiet - not own up but also not make any claims to have seen wildlife.

OldWomanInACardigan · 29/07/2025 14:54

Say nothing - but you really should seek help about the night terrors

MiniCoopers · 29/07/2025 14:56

Blame the foxes having sex, similar sound

WordsFailMeYetAgain · 29/07/2025 15:33

I would fess up to having night terrors. There is no shame in them.
