Sick of non-existant "service"

The complete lack of service from businesses, including huge multi-national companies is becoming infuriating and time consuming.
Today I had to resend an email to someone as after 3 weeks of not hearing I followed up for them to say they couldn't find it.
Last week I tried phoning three different companies (different reasons), two of these didn't answer and there was no facility to leave a message. I phoned because I thought it would be quicker then email.
The week prior I emailed a fast food chain, and haven't heard back.
What has happened that it's now acceptable to take several days to respond to a customer or in many cases, not at all?

Totally agree it's ridiculous, I had to get in touch with a local council department today and after holding for 20 plus minutes I was told my issue would be escalated to priority and to expect a phone call from the manager within the next five days ! Five days? I'd reply within half an hour in the real world.
Also requested a copy of a birth certificate recently was told 18 days as standard, paid £38 for express delivery and still waiting 4 days later, rang up and they said "well we put a first class stamp on it so we met our obligation" and suggested I pay again !
