Informed consent

I'm making this post as something has been bothering me for a while.

I've been watching uploads on social media of a granddaughter posting videos of her grandmother who is in late stages of dementia.

The videos are touching and very moving. They are raising awareness of dementia as they are recieving many views. The granddaughter who uploads them is also very informative and gives some excellent advice how to handle the disease.

I could go on and on about how positive the videos are.

The niggle I have is informed consent and how this works for the lady who is the centre of these weekly recordings.

She doesn't understand she's being filmed. She doesn't know thousands of people are watching her every week. She can not unconsent to any previous consent she has previously given.

How do others feel about this?

I do enjoy the videos and I like the granddaughter and how she interacts with her lovely, witty nan. I can see there is genuine love, hurt and care there.

I'm on the fence if I should stop watching these videos as it's wrong or not. Or to keep watching them as it's lovely and heart-warming to watch but sometimes makes me feel uncomfortable. It's greatly raising awareness of dementia and will definitely be helping care givers with the skills and support how to care for their loved ones with this cruel disease.

UPDATE

The granddaughter just posted a video entitled 'A Big Announcement'. I assumed she was doing the correct thing and was going to say that she is stopping filming her nan and posting these videos.

No.

She's explaining that she is now having two completely separate channels. A lifestyle vlog and a channel just for nan video content where she will continue the narrative of raising awareness of dementia.

I don't know what to make of this decision but it seems to me she's getting her ducks in a row for when her nan passes on and trying to make her brands more sustainable.

So the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT wasn't what I thought it was sadly.

Thats the first time I've seen her but she came up on my fyp just now

The creator i thought you were talking about who also films her grandma with dementia made an identical announcement at the weekend.

@CokeEverything

Oh my Lord. Ive just seen some of her videos. Theyre awful

The other creator i thought you mentioned visits her gran but shes lucid a lot of the time, is up, dressed and they go out for lunch etc. Granny very often clearly has no clue what her grand daughter is talking about but agrees with her

Albeit its still filming without consent it has a very different feel to it than the one you're highlighting

When I say she doesn't have any idea she's being filmed. She truly has no idea.

Definitely not. Theres no way she'd give consent for people to see her like that

The other creator tells her gran sometimes that shes filming but she hasn't a clue what she means. You can see shes just agreeing when she talks about TT etc

I have reported this channel to youtube. After watching these vidoes im shocked it is allowed to happen. No matter how fuffy it seems on the serface.

I suggest others follow suit.

I saw this earlier. Prior to this I always thought she was a nice character. Ethics still questionable but she seemed genuinely loving and supportive towards her gran and the whole raising awareness thing. Now she just feels like another wannabe influencer.
