I don't understand the whole concept of leopard print as a neutral when it comes to clothes. Like jeans, shorts etc. I love a good pattern, but usually on tops not bottoms.

I see it everywhere atm and I'm wondering what I'm missing. Am I just getting old?

AIBU - it's a neutral, get over it and get some fashion sense!
AINBU - it's not a neutral, give me blue and black jeans anyday!

I’ve got grey hair and most leopard print looks awful against it. Neutral my arse.Grin

TheAutumnCrow · 26/07/2025 12:12

Isn't it what photographers and designers who don't really like women much make them wear for 'fashion shoots' to accompany Guardian interviews? Just musing.

5128gap · 26/07/2025 12:16

If you can't wear a multi coloured floral patterned top with it without looking like you've raided a dressing up box in the dark, it's not a neutral.

HopingForTheBest25 · 26/07/2025 12:47

I don't think it's a neutral - to me a neutral is a background colour, that you can wear with patterns and not clash, Leopard print is a pattern on its own, not a background shade.
Plus, it always makes me think of stereotyped barmaid outfit - Bet Lynch (that dates me!)
I know younger people don't have that mental association but however expensive the item, it's something I can't help associating with cheap and tacky.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 26/07/2025 12:54

Definitely not a neutral

JoshLymanSwagger · 26/07/2025 12:56

OMG you'd end up looking like Rod Stewart, or Kenny Everett! 🤣

Postre · 26/07/2025 12:59

Nope, not neutral

I love a little bit (little being the operative word) of leopard print, but I agree, it's not neutral.

Or Kat Slater

CarrieMoonbeams · 26/07/2025 13:10

I just came here to say that @JoshLymanSwagger . My MIL inexplicably bought me a pair of leopard print leggings many years ago, and when we got home and I tried them on, DH started strutting around the room singing "IF ya want ma bodyyyy, AND ya think I'm sexyyy" etc.

(And I still don't think they're neutral anyway!)

TempestTost · 26/07/2025 13:23

Who says it is? You wear trousers like that with a neutral top.

GreenGully · 26/07/2025 13:29

I've always seen animal print as statement. I love leopard print but it's a balance to not look like Cat Slater!

I've seen the phrasing of it as a neutral multiple times, online and offline, over the past few years. I don't personally consider something a neutral if you're limited as to what you can pair it with!

I hate leopard/animal print on anything!

Just looks horrible and tacky, no matter who’s wearing it, or what item it’s on

CoastalCalm · 26/07/2025 18:48

I have got a tube skirt in camel and small leopard print having always been very anti - I think with a black sweater it looks lovely
