Our dishwasher often (not always) leaves glasses and plates smelling metallic. I really don't know how else to describe it. Like raw egg whites. It's not a smell of associate with them being dirty and I've cleaned out the filter etc.

We're in a soft water area and I've changed my tablets several times to no avail.

Anyone else had this and did you manage to resolve it?

Have you cleaned out the dishwasher using one of those limescale / cleaner sachets.

Metallic and like raw egg whites? How odd.

With dishwashers it's normally something stuck in the spinny arm - try taking that off and running loads of water through it, pipe cleaners or a toothpick to dislodge anything stuck in or near the holes.

My car once stunk off egg.. Mechanically minded dh started taking bits off under the chassis. Under the bonnet..
Upon moving the back seat to get better access he found....

A hard boiled egg under the driver's seat..
Rouge egg from not so recent picnic...
Grim smell I tell you...
Soak the arms in the sink op. Bits of sweet corn fit in there.. Likely that ime.

It’s dishwasher smell. Glasses particularly I find. Not a bad smell but a smell.

When you open it and it’s just finished, the hot air that comes out, that smells the same to me.

Run the cycle at a lower temp?

BertieBotts · 23/07/2025 22:21

The hot air that comes out of a dishwasher if it's not clogged up with something nasty has always smelled like plain boiled egg noodles to me for some reason.

Actually - I have just had a thought - if your water is soft, do you use salt in the machine and if so have you adjusted that down to the right level? It's usually set to a level for medium-to-hard water when you get them new and you're meant to set it to a lower level for soft water and a higher level for very hard water.

We have this if things that have come into contact with eggs go into the dishwasher. If something egg related sneaks in there, everything has that egg white whiff. It's horrible, especially on cutlery and glasses.

Icebreakhell · 23/07/2025 22:46

I find they tend to do this when on the way out. The glass stops feeling and smelling as clean, cutlery a bit smeared, etc.

Willowskyblue · 23/07/2025 22:47

Have you cleaned the filter. Ours sometimes has a funny smell when it hasn’t been cleaned for a while.
