Hello, curious for some rather specific thoughts/experience on this! Has anyone ever frozen coleslaw? Is this a hack I've missed?

YABU - thumbs up to freezing coleslaw (defrosting before serving obviously!)

YANBU - thumbs down - not a good idea/have tried this doesn't work

Never tried it but I would guess it might get a bit mushy on defrosting so the texture might be "wrong"?

You could prepare the veg and freeze without the dressing.

Coconutter24 · 22/07/2025 17:13

If you use mayonnaise then no it can’t be frozen it will not defrost well

44PumpLane · 22/07/2025 17:15

As @Coconutter24 says you can't freeze the mayonnaise, so shop bought coleslaw won't be freezable as the mayo in it is likely to split on thawing.

Never tried this, but I can't see how it could produce a nice crisp result. The key ingredient in coleslaw is cabbage, a brassica vegetable like broccoli and Brussels sprouts. In my experience frozen broccoli and sprouts are not very nice because they go mushy when cooked, and I think that's because of what happens to the cell structure in the freezer. Obviously you wouldn't cook coleslaw but I think the damage is done before that.

Honestly the list of stuff people say on here that they freeze blows my mind! The texture of so much of it is ruined upon defrosting that I can’t see why it’s worth freezing when the result once defrosting is inedible anyway.
I would not advise freezing coleslaw but I would advise against freezing most stuff anyway 😂

mamagogo1 · 22/07/2025 17:20

It will be mushy

RowanRed90 · 22/07/2025 17:51

Yes I agree. I just wanted to check I wasn't being unreasonable

Well I'd freeze many things but I think I'd draw the line at coleslaw, I'd expect it to go mushy.

You could always try a bit yo see OP. It won't be dangerous, just possibly unpleasant.
