I’m not a gamer and know basically nothing about consoles, games etc.

Considering getting one for DC and would be looking for games like Zelda, ones where you’re a character and have quests or tasks. Would love to hear recommendations.

Minecraft is a great game for kids.

personally I love old Mario games, the Wii was great fun to play as a family - Mario party, Mario Kart, etc.

VR headset. Brilliant fun.

Nintendo Switch would be my recommendation. It is compatible with the Zelda games and Mario Kart etc. Also lots of fun independent games to buy from the digital store. I recommend Stardew Valley and Spiritfarer.

How old are they?

Switch is great for age 3+. Zelda games are brilliant. You can get the really old game Link’s Awakening for Switch which is fun. All of the Lego games (age 7+) are brilliant too and reasonably priced. They all follow a similar format. Lego City particularly is great fun as you work through levels as different Lego characters (police man, farmer, astronaut etc) and follow clues to catch the villain. There’s a few side quests along the way that you can look up online, like finding all the flagpoles and gold bricks in each part of town. Lego Harry Potter is fun if they’re fans of the books/films, though the game is a bit dated now.

DS has never got into Animal Crossing or Hogwarts Legacy. If I had time to play I’d find them totally absorbing!

Another vote for the Switch here - agree with all the game recommendations from other posters, and can add Yoshis Crafted World is a really lovely chilled game easily playable by a 5ish yr old.

What age?

QuietLifeNoDrama · 21/07/2025 20:26

Age of DC is pretty important here. A switch is a great first console for under 10’s but pre-teens and above id say you need to be looking at a PS5 or an Xbox

You don’t say what age. We have the Switch with a 4YO and 8YO. The 4YO can only really manage Mario Party and Mario Kart - enjoys both though! My 8YO has loved Zelda (the newish one where you play as Zelda), Princess Peach Showtime, Super Mario Bros Wonder, Animal Crossing and of course Minecraft.
