Is Sunday a school night?

There’s a hotly contested issue on another thread. I think Sunday is a school night because school is the next day, meaning early to bed, ready. But some people are saying that a school night is when you’ve been at school, so Friday but not Sunday. They are wrong. AIBU?

I saw that thread and my first thought was, Sunday is not a school night. I am a teacher!

I'm a teacher too. Sunday is definitely a school night. Friday is not. YANBU, OP.

TheChosenTwo · 13/07/2025 18:50

I didn’t think it was that hotly contested on the other thread tbh, I thought most people agreed that a school night meant the night before you have to go to school so regular bedtime, homework done etc!!

Anyway, Sunday night is definitely considered a school night in our house.

Can you give your reasoning please? "Not on a school night" is short hand for "No you can't go out because you've got school tomorrow", surely?

Teacher and I agree.

Do you want to go out on Friday night for a couple of beers and to see a band? Definitely. No school tomorrow!

Do you want to go out on Sunday for a couple of beers and to see a band? Can't, sorry. It's a school night.

Pinkflowersinavase · 13/07/2025 18:52

Yes, school the next day means bed early night before so its a school night then when that is that situation.

Doggymummar · 13/07/2025 18:54

Well,it depends if you have work tomorrow or not. In our house we don't have children at school, but we still say it's a school night if we have work the following day. Not everyone works Monday to Friday.

Of course it's a school night.

Teacher:
school night = lesson prep to do!!
Not school night = wine!

YES! Wine or late playing out = school night.

Sunday is a school night, unless its before a bank Holiday Monday or before a school holiday week.

Most people but there were holdouts. Wrong and bad holdouts.

Now an adult working Monday to Friday Sunday definitely a “work” or “school” night.
The daytime on Sunday is not a work day for me, but that pit of the stomach feeling is definitely real from about now.

itispersonal · 13/07/2025 18:57

If you are working the next day it’s a school night!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 13/07/2025 18:58

Sunday night is the most school night of school nights!
A school night is when you hsve to get up for school the next day.

Didimum · 13/07/2025 18:58

It is a school night, but we definitely don’t treat it like one. Much more like a Friday or Saturday.

freddiewini · 13/07/2025 19:01

It’s a half school night

Zen · 13/07/2025 19:07

It is the schooliest of all the school nights, a full week early mornings, exhaustion and monotony is in front of us. (I’m not a teacher and my children are adults but it’s still a school night.)

Gizlotsmum · 13/07/2025 19:08

Is on our house. So late nights are allowed Friday and Sat but not Sunday in term time

persisted · 13/07/2025 19:10

Sunday is definitely a school night, even though now it's work.

I have to do the boring prep making lunch and can't stay up late.

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 13/07/2025 19:12

Sunday to Thursdays are school/work nights.
By 5/6pm on a Sunday its time to start getting ready for the new school/work week ahead. Dinner should be done or eaten soon, clothes/uniform sorted, bag packed and lunch sorted, shower/bath then chill for a bit before a reasonably early night.

Groundhedgehogday · 13/07/2025 19:14

Sundays are the ultimate school night. As a child it was homework, roast dinner and Heartbeat while my mum furiously ironed the uniform for the week.

Now I'm the one ironing the uniform. Don't watch crap Sunday night TV any more though.

Eh? Have you left out a word or are you trying to confuse us?
