Leaving Dubrovnik, feeling sad.

AIBU? Anyone ever been on holiday that feels a bit more special than any other holiday? I know it's why holidays are holidays. If we could come all the time it wouldn't be special, but me, DH and 16 yo (just finished her GCSE's) DD booked this because of Game of Thrones, to sightsee etc. But honestly, this place is so breathtaking. We only came for a week and it's been the most I've packed into a week. Normally I'm a lazy bastard. Lounge by the pool/out in the evening type of person, but that's just not an option here.

There are so, so, so many fucking steps, and we're in an air BnB near the top, but the views,. THE VIEWS!!!!!!!

I am going to miss it SO much.

I mean, I'm not screaming in the Sistene Chapel or anything like that, just feeling a bit deflated, watching the sunrise from the balcony and feeling a pang of melancholy.

I loved it so much

A few years ago we took my father too

We had such a lovely time
It was October and lovely and warm
Very nice people too

Oblomov25 · 13/07/2025 05:31

Loved it too. Restaurant at the top, ziplining, restaurants at the harbour, the island hops, great food, great place.

Mikart · 13/07/2025 06:27

We also had a great time there except for the cruise ship invasions. Loved the war photography gallery.

@ColinOfficeTrolley
I've been twice, Dubrovnik is my favourite place on earth!
Completely understand how you feel.
I found it difficult to explain just how lovely it is to someone who's never been.
Im so glad you've enjoyed it, get home and book again for next year.

It’s stunning, Croatia is beautiful but Dubroknik is really special.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 13/07/2025 07:59

Loved Dubrovnik. Loved Cavtat on a day trip from there even more. Going back to Croatia in three weeks. Beautiful country.

StrangledVowels · 13/07/2025 08:01

If you aren’t screaming at it like the Sistine Chapel ceiling, you aren’t really appreciating it.

Mummyratbag · 13/07/2025 08:02

What's the heat like OP? We are off to Split next month.

Stop 😂

Dubrovnik is beautiful- Proto is one of my most favourite restaurants ever

ClassicStripe · 13/07/2025 08:24

Never been to Croatia but me and DD cried buckets leaving Disneyland Paris. It had just been the most perfect holiday after so much excitement for it.

Truetoself · 13/07/2025 08:29

Interested to know what you did in Dubrovnik for a week. We did the Game of thrones tour and Island hopping boat trip last time. So this time was going to plan a day trip to Bosnia and Montenegro. But curious to know other must do’s in Dubrovnik itself

ChattyChai · 13/07/2025 08:29

I still get sad when leaving holidays I’ve enjoyed. I think it’s normal to feel like that, it means you’ve had a good time!

ColdTofuSandwich · 13/07/2025 08:36

Screaming in the Sistine chapel - simpler times.

cheeseomelette · 13/07/2025 08:39

We loved it. We had an amazing view of the harbour and it was all so gorgeous. Agree re cruise ship invasions though.

we loved walking on the walls and the little cliffside bar that you accessed through a little door midway round. The views from there were incredible

We are off to hvar island this week. 🥰

About to comment similar about ‘back in the day’. OP letting side down 😂

My first cruise stated in Dubrovnik- I’ll never forget the Sail Away, it took my breath away. Been back many times since.

ConcernedOfClapham · 13/07/2025 08:45

I always thought that was the point of a holiday, if it’s served its purpose! (I’ve had the odd bad holiday, and couldn’t wait to leave, but that’s obviously different)

We did Dubrovnik a few years back and loved it (like you); that’s why we’re going back later this year.

But I’m never too sad to be going home - we miss our dog so much when away!

Just go back as soon as possible, is my advice 👍

ColinOfficeTrolley · 13/07/2025 08:56

We done the wall walk. Kayaking, little alcoves, nice bars, restaurants, Carmen trattoria - food amazing

Dubrovnik is beautiful so yanbu. I feel the same kind of melancholy for Prague. I lived there and have also holidayed there and really yearn for the place. I put it down to maybe I was from there in a past life so have this deeper connection than just any holiday destination. Maybe you have the same for Dubrovnik 😊

Rosecoffeecup · 13/07/2025 09:02

Beautiful place. I went a few years ago with friends and had no expectations, but its one of the best holidays ive had

The fish and gelato everywhere were just sublime

Pianoaholic · 13/07/2025 09:07

I've been twice and loved it. Especially Lokrum island, walking around the walls, boat trip to Cavtat, loads of swimming in the sea as it was so hot!
I would like to visit a different part of Croatia but this year we are going to Norway as I've always wanted to go.

Imonlysaying · 13/07/2025 09:09

Going in October. Where did you stay OP? Which area is best? Get very confused when booking holidays 🤣

W0tnow · 13/07/2025 09:13

I went there 25 years ago. It’s GLORIOUS! The colour of the water! The main drag in the old town! Just incredible. You know it was massively restored after the war in the 90s?

Punkkatkitty · 13/07/2025 09:15

Was there in June and felt the exact same. Something so special about that city. The light is just unreal, everything is so clean and the people are all so friendly and helpful. Appreciate tourism is the key industry but even so.
We went on the blue caves speedboat tour and zip lining and our accommodation in Lapad had a pool so was just the most simultaneously relaxed/active holidays I’ve been on!
Loved it so much that even the incredibly expensive prices for food and drink didn’t annoy me! Deffo planning a return trip!

worstofbothworlds · 13/07/2025 09:17

Am I allowed to say I go regularly for work?
I was invited this year but I had already promised the DCs a special half term treat, and booked it, so I declined but will probably go next year.
