To ignore mumsnet on what react emojis mean?

When I see the clap emoji, I think "well played" or "agree", not "thanks". (Thanks might be 🙏)

Thumbs up means "I like this", not "agree".

Am I BU or do others also ignore the mumsnet meanings (apart from the heart, which I agree means love)?

Do we often mean different things with emojis and is it thus a bit of a flawed language?

😭 I take them literally

I see 'thanks' as a bit sarcastic as well at times, but thats just me overthinking

I use the ❤️ emoji to signify laughter now though

Give us back the laughing emoji mumsnet!!!

XenoBitch · 11/07/2025 23:08

Well, this was why the laughing one was removed.... because people were using it to be passive aggressive. It was being used on comments from vulnerable posters that were not funny at all.

ChocolateGanache · 11/07/2025 23:11

You do know you can use any emoji you like right?

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 11/07/2025 23:11

That's a prayer 🙏 emoji.. like here's wishful thinking.. or l hope it all turns out okay.. or I'm praying for you.
When l typed the word prayer 🙏 it automatically popped up.

That's what I always thought, but recently I was told its a high five.

I did use it sarcastically, but only when someone was being a total dick, not showing vulnerability. I also used it to appreciate someone's funny post.

I also use the ❤️ response for laughter now.

It literally says what it is when you hover on it. Thumbs up says "agree"

Thats a good idea because I often wish there was a laugh one, some people are hilarious

Yeah, I'm sure posters understand the heart is laughter if they've said something funny.

JDM625 · 12/07/2025 00:03

As another poster said, you only need to hover over an emoji and the usual meaning will pop up!
🙏 Praying
👏 Clapping
😭Crying (not laughing as someone on another thread thought!)
🤷‍♀️Surely its not that hard?

Its not a heigh 5. Unless they are wearing the same jumper, 😅

people can still put laughing emojis though so what's the point?

I sometimes wonder how some people get up in the morning and put their clothes on the right way round…

But now i don't know if your using ❤️ for sarcasm or for being kind 🤔

Because the react emojis were private.
Funnily enough you don't get people replying with laugh emojis now on posts that are not actually funny, as everyone can see them.

Shitmonger · 12/07/2025 00:12

I “ thank” people for making me laugh now. I also use the thanks for well-written posts that present a strong point, even if I completely disagree with the point they’re making (I still appreciate them contributing something thoughtful/valuable).

I liked the laugh reaction but apparently some people were utter losers that would search for the usernames of posters they didn’t like and laugh react to every single post they made. Completely batshit.

I am aware of that, thanks. I refer to that in my post. I'm just saying that to my mind, thumbs-up doesn't mean agree! It means "like" or "well-played."

OP posts:
Binglebong · 12/07/2025 11:48

I use the thanks as applause.
