I have recently come into contact with someone and decided to Google them. I went down a rabbit hole and have discovered over a few months about 3 years ago they were registered director of 18 companies for less than a month before they then resigned. Most of the companies have been dissolved but I am really curious as to what may have been happening?can anyone tell me what it might mean?

No idea, but it sounds dodgy as hell so I’m now avidly following this thread to see if someone can explain.

IReallyLoveItHere · 10/07/2025 21:45

Hmm, at one point hmrc were giving a few hundred quid if you registered online for VAT and lots of people invented multiple companies which never traded. But that was when they were 'encouraging' people online, I think you're forced now. It could be something similar?

Or he cocked up his companies house application many times.

If it isn't outright dodgy I wonder whether he had some good ideas, got a very basic start up going then sold it.

Does sound more likely to be dodgy though. Have you tried googling or facebooking the company names?

Come into contact with them in what way? A romantic way? As in considering dating etc?

I’m not exactly sure what they could be up but I'm
guessing along the lines of money laundering maybe? 🤷‍♀️ I could be completely wrong but maybe creating companies to launder some money through then quickly closing/dissolving them. Or they are opening the companies to take out loans or buy assets ‘for the company’ then closing the company so that they can’t be chased for the repayments?

Or maybe I’m taking nonsense as I don’t know enough about this sort of thing!

3 years ago was the post Covid era. Could be possible that they created a bunch of companies to benefit from subsidies, PPEs, vaccines or other business models that was only around for a very short time. Or they were involved in some money laundering or tax evasion scheme. It's definitely a bit dodgy though...genuine entrepreneurs don't take advantage of bureaucratic loopholes like this.

Bearinthesmallmessyflat · 10/07/2025 21:53

Were they director of all 18 companies simultaneously or at separate times?

whatisgoingonandwhy · 10/07/2025 22:44

they were directors for the most part at the same time. I think it’s dodgy as hell but the question is could I and should I report it and if so to whom?
I would rather not say how I came into contact with them as it could be outing!

Sounds dodgy as hell, but realistically what would you be reporting? It's all in the public domain
(And I would like to think that Companies House has procedures/algorithms in place to spot dodgy dealings).

Anfieldgirl · 10/07/2025 23:11

Why are Mumsnetters so obsessed with 'reporting' people? 😂

whatisgoingonandwhy · 10/07/2025 23:25

@Createausername1970yes I had thought that it was likely to have been picked up already, just so curious about what it could mean! Google has been little help with my sleuthing
