To worry about migrants in Crete?

We're booked to go to Crete in August. I've just read that thousands of migrants have arrived there recently in small boats, and that the local government is overwhelmed.

Am I right to be concerned about safety, and worried there'll be large piles of dumped rubbish and people sleeping on the streets?

Have any MNetters been there recently? Is it a mess?

I've not been to Crete for a few years but am considering going in September so following with interest. Assuming you live in the UK though, can it be any worse than here?

I’m going next week so I’ll report back!

I’m going in early Oct so following. I wouldn’t correlate migrants with lack of safety… I suppose they will be housed in camps and that these won’t be in touristy areas so it may be that any rubbish etc is confined to those areas.

I was there in May, no rubbish on the streets, no marauding gangs of men just lovely sunshine and friendly locals.

Crete is a long way from anywhere so it seems unlikely that it would be a destination for migrants in small boats

I came back from there recently. I've been going there for 10 years and have never seen anything like that.

Thanks all!

That's really reassuring to hear @ilovesooty . We've never been to Crete before, and panicked a bit when reading on the BBC that thousands had arrived in recent weeks.
