New job offer and telling current work

I will need to inform them, as they will be contacted for references so I’ll have to give them a heads up. Would you do this in person or is message ok? I’m off work today so can’t do it today, and the place offering me a job would like my references emails sent over so they can send them off.

Rightly or wrongly, I would consider anything else rude. You'll need a reference so I would hand in your notice professionally. Make the call and follow up in writing.
