To ask about calling Australia

Posting for traffic.

I need to call Australia later tonight. I don’t have a land line anymore.

Last time I called (it’s a government organisation) I used we WhatsApp thinking it would be free and it cost me £64!

Ive seen online some companies offering 1p a minute calls using mobiles.

Has anyone unused these? Can anyone recommend a company? Anything I need to be aware of?

TIA

How did whatsapp cost you £64? Weren't you on WiFi?

I don't understand this either. Did you use extra phone data at an extortionate rate or something?

Youdontseehow · 09/07/2025 20:15

I just called the office number via WhatsApp after someone suggesting it on money supermarket.

I don’t know why it charged but it was actually £65 (just checked my bank account).

If your phone is connected to WiFi, turn off your 4G/5G/whatever and call using WhatsApp.

Youdontseehow · 09/07/2025 20:19

@IMissSparkling I’m pretty sure I called using WiFi the last time as I never have my data on in the house

Could you use Teams or Zoom?

Youdontseehow · 09/07/2025 20:22

I’ve just googled and it says the Australian Tax Office (whom I’m calling) doesn’t engage with WhatsApp which is probably why I was charged so much

so I think I need to use one of the cheap access numbers -

@Petrovaposy - it’s the Australian Tax Office rather than a named person

Does your phone provider let you buy an add on for your plan for international? If so, then just buy it for this month and cancel straight away.

Lots of options here.

WhistlingStraits · 09/07/2025 20:43

I call my friend in Australia via WhatsApp about 4 times a week - doesn’t cost a penny.

Youdontseehow · 09/07/2025 20:44

@WhistlingStraits Im calling the Australian tax office and they don’t accept calls via WhatsApp

Ask Mr. GPT.

Youdontseehow · 09/07/2025 20:46

Thanks folks. I’ve added international calling as @Readyforseptember suggested.

Fly buggers charge for this month and the next month too immediately but it’s still better than a massive charge!

Hi @Youdontseehow i have Sky Mobile & needed to call Australia last year. I added International Calling for a month & got a really cheap rate. I think there was a £3 fee or something & then a few pence/minute. I can’t remember the exact details & it was tricky to find out how to add it. But I managed to do it via the MySky app eventually.

Youdontseehow · 09/07/2025 21:05

Thanks @Kitchendilemas - I think I’ve managed to add it on 🤞
