So disappointed with this gym

Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic. Recently moved to a new area and joined an independent gym in town. Before moving I used to be a member at a modern, chain gym but there isn't one around here for miles. This new gym has been around for over 20 years and has a good reputation. Owners and instructors all lovely. All ages and no posers. Lots of free or cheap parking right outside. Never feels crowded. No contract, can pay in cash or by card.

However - it's quite run down, dirty, has mould and cobwebs on some of the walls and in the changing rooms. The boiler has been switched off in the summer months, so cold showers only. The sauna is closed as apparently an expensive part is needed but is unaffordable at the moment. The equipment is old and worn - some pads on the machines are torn. Air conditioning non existent, meaning it gets so hot in warm weather and becomes difficult to work out. Some other members just sit on the machines not working out but using their phones or watching other members. I have also come away smelling of mould or even chocolate, which is really unpleasant.

Is this how independent gyms are? I feel bad about possibly not going back especially as the staff and owners are so friendly and helpful.

No, the independent gyms I've been to have always been brilliant! How much is the fee?

Edited to add - by brilliant, I mean clean, comfortable, with working equipment, no dodgy smells or mould!!

£34 or £44 monthly depending on what membership. Can also PAYG or buy weekly membership.

In the time taken for you to write that long post, you could have provided the gym with some feedback via email

No its not how they are. Mine is clean. No mould no cobwebs. And whilst there is no air con there are huge fans all over the place.

Warm showers and good equipment.

Many people do just sit inbetween their reps but not for hours on end.

Probably no point.

Don't feel bad about voting with your feet.

Already done. I went in last week and without air conditioning on a hot day it was so hard to do a full workout. So sweaty, and only cold showers to wash in afterwards. Grim. Decided not to go back - such s shame.

Personally, I would email them and tell them politely and explain why you won’t be back. Surely they must realise though.

ladyofshertonabbas · 16/07/2025 14:36

No it's not how others are imo.

My gym & pool and associated sauna, hot tub, steam room etc are absolutely spotless.
I pay over £100 per month.

In your shoes Id give them feedback because I doubt their marketing blurb mentions the issues you’ve found!
Sounds dreadful. Tell your mates!

Your gym etc sounds great and well worth the money, but sadly there is nothing like that around here.

It's beyond me how they've got such a good reputation and following. Perhaps people haven't experienced better.
