Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic. Recently moved to a new area and joined an independent gym in town. Before moving I used to be a member at a modern, chain gym but there isn't one around here for miles. This new gym has been around for over 20 years and has a good reputation. Owners and instructors all lovely. All ages and no posers. Lots of free or cheap parking right outside. Never feels crowded. No contract, can pay in cash or by card.
However - it's quite run down, dirty, has mould and cobwebs on some of the walls and in the changing rooms. The boiler has been switched off in the summer months, so cold showers only. The sauna is closed as apparently an expensive part is needed but is unaffordable at the moment. The equipment is old and worn - some pads on the machines are torn. Air conditioning non existent, meaning it gets so hot in warm weather and becomes difficult to work out. Some other members just sit on the machines not working out but using their phones or watching other members. I have also come away smelling of mould or even chocolate, which is really unpleasant.
Is this how independent gyms are? I feel bad about possibly not going back especially as the staff and owners are so friendly and helpful.
