Workmens tools left in the garden

I'm getting some work done in my back garden. I researched firms and went with one that looked professional and could do the job. They were certainly not the cheapest.
Anyway, work stopped at lunchtime Fri. No problem, it was pouring down with rain. However, they literally downed tools and left.
There are tools and equipment just left lying around and the back gate was left open.
Apart from the fact "a good trademan looks after his tools"; who is liable should the tools get stolen?
