To buy two, just because they match?

We have a stand alone tall fridge and tall freezer, same make and design so look good next to each other. Fridge has given up the ghost. Freezer performing as good as new. Both around 10-15yrs old and can’t buy this make and model anymore. Need to replace like for like to fit into kitchen units.

AIBU and wasteful to replace freezer at the same time so the new fridge matches the freezer, despite it working perfectly? Would you?

New freezer would be around £300. Old freezer worthless if sold due to age.

I have side by side fridge and freezer that match. I would certainly want to replace both if one died, and would if I could easily afford it. The old freezer doesn’t have to go to waste, you can offer it on a local group for giving away. I’m sure someone will be grateful for it. If I couldn’t afford it (the freezer was quite a bit more expensive than the fridge in my pair) I’d look into getting a cheap secondhand fridge to do for now while I saved up for the matching pair.

I would never sleep if I didn’t.

@DustyMaiden this made me chuckle!!

I would but matching. You can sell your freezer or donate to a charity.

NuffSaidSam · 01/07/2025 22:40

I would, but donate the freezer somewhere don't send it to landfill if it works well. The British Heart Foundation collect big items like this, they're worth a call.

alcoholnightmare · 01/07/2025 22:46

I would definitely buy again so they match. Can you put your ‘old’ freezer in a garage?

SapporoBaby · 01/07/2025 22:48

Sell the freezer and buy the new one. It might give up the ghost soon anyway.

AbzMoz · 01/07/2025 23:10

If you were to donate it just to mention a number of local Foodbanks might make use of it if you think there’s life in it yet.

Chickenhorse · 01/07/2025 23:13

Put the freezer in your garage if you have one. Or give to charity or sell to someone (in need) at a cheap price.

TotHappy · 01/07/2025 23:30

Bloody hell I'm surprised by the responses! No I would never. It's working perfectly.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 02/07/2025 00:09

Well if you can afford it and can give away your old one, why not? Depends on how important aesthetics are to you in your kitchen.

BIossomtoes · 02/07/2025 00:11

I wouldn’t think twice. Definitely a new matching pair.

If you had two matching sofas, and one broke, would you replace both, or just replace the broken one and have two sofas that didn’t match? Not wanting to start an argument, just genuinely curious.

TotHappy · 02/07/2025 10:48

Two sofas that didn't match.

TotHappy · 02/07/2025 10:49

I didn't think I was unusually tight but I wouldn't dream of getting rid of something that works and I presumably like, because it didn't match.

I don’t think it makes you tight, I think it means you care less about the appearance of your home decor than a lot of people and you prioritise more practical things. From an environmental perspective you’re certainly in the right. But a lot of people, myself included, would find things being mismatched like this really jarring and not want to have it in our home. It wouldn’t be a relaxing atmosphere because I’d just keep noticing the mismatch and it would just quietly bother me. You might be unusual if it wouldn’t bother you, but you’re definitely not “wrong”. I guess we’re all different.

TotHappy · 03/07/2025 09:35

Yes, of course and to be honest I've never been very into matching anyway so my style is different - I would try to find a second sofa or freezer that complements the first. But yes, I do prioritise other things over looks - the majority of my furniture is hand me down so my decor is by necessity 'eclectic '!
