What colour should my hallway be??!

This is my hallway, with a strange colour filter from Farrow & Ball on it. We want to paint only under the dado rail, a medium to dark colour, on analypta paper. Our living room is a dark green, so probably not green. What do you think? The room you can see beyond is not pink either, it's a green toned white. I will post a pic of the under dado tail wallpaper too. Any ideas gratefully recieved. It's north facing, not loads of light and quite small!!

The wallpaper. It looks infinitely nicer in real life and the squares are about the size of your palm. It's a sort of 1930s style, which is roughly the same period as the house.

But what colour is the wall above the dado? Is it already that pink, or is this just an impression?

Honestly, if it's North facing and gets very little light then wallpaper is probably your worst option! I've always found it sucks the light of a room.

I wouldn't go for dark either - unless it's done well and there lots of light, again it makes the rooms look dark and small.

I'd go for bright white and then lots of photos/decorations to make it less clinical. Perhaps blue at the bottom and then white above the bannister?

How about the same colour/tone as the stair carpet under the rail and a blue-white above?
What kind of atmosphere do you want to achieve?

It is just a sort off off white all over atm. We want it dark under the dado rail because of the scruffy marks our little kids leave, which really show up on light colours

Yes, blue is what I had been thinking. Cornflower but a bit darker. I want it both dramatic and fresh looking. Are those two things mutually exclusive?! Also agree on the photos etc.

The Dulux website is quite good for telling you what colours are best in north/south etc rooms depending on what you want. I would go for a taupe below and light cream above.

This is a slightly lighter version of the blue I have in mind. Remember, above the dado rail would be a white in the same colour family, not the blue. What do you think? The carpet is much less offensive irl, btw.

It's all just an off-white atm.

I think I would go for a grey/blue to tie in with the carpet, something like this?

Dulex have a visualiser app that you can add photos to then play around with their colour range. I found it quite useful.

Washable, scrubbable emulsion is available. I have a north facing hallway and stairs and avoid blue as it is a cool colour.

PumpkinScarf · 01/07/2025 18:35

Another vote for blue! Maybe a lighter navy

Loveagoodring · 01/07/2025 18:51

I have a similar north facing hallway and we went dark teal (lick teal 03) on the bottom and an off white on the top. It’s actually made it look a lot bigger and brighter than the plain grey it was before so don’t be put off dark colours!

Use the Dulux app. Hours of virtual painting fun!

@Abitlosttoday so I had my stairs and upper landing redone recently and had dado rail added. I choose a slate blue grey colour for the lower part which I absolutely love. I’ve included the product I used below (once vetted by HQ) as well as a pic of my stairs though I just did now so it looks a tad darker than in full daylight! I just think it’s a very modern fresh colour 🙂.
