I am about 17 stone and flying Ryanair soon
will I need a seatbelt extender or will I be fine? I fit fine on rollercoasters so just wondering?

I'm about the same and have never had a problem.

Clairey1986 · 30/06/2025 23:18

I mean without your height no one will have a clue. Also Ryan Air like all other airlines have various different planes in their fleet so even if one would be fine another won’t.

If you’re concerned just ask for an extender on your way in.

Im 12 stone and i was worried about the same thing with easyjet flying to London from Manchester.

I ended up not booking the city break because i was pertrified of being stuck in the belt or it not fitting me.

My GP said i have to lose 2 or 3 stone im only 5ft 3.

I’m about 5’6-5’7

My partner is 5’8 and 17 stone. He didn’t need one in a Ryan Air flight recently. However, he said it was ‘very snug’ so will in future ask for one.

I am 5’4 and used to be 16 stone - much of my weight was around my ‘middle area’ (hips/belly) and I always used one for comfort - I could (just) fasten the normal belt but it was so uncomfortable it dug in.

I would imagine it depends more on your body shape and fat distribution to be fair. You’ll be able to ask for one if you find you need one.

JudithOnHolidayAgain · 01/07/2025 07:49

No-one will care if you ask for an extender!!!
I've found the belts are not all the same size on ryanair......on a recent outbound flight I needed an extender, on the way back I had inches to spare!

I'm the same height and weight as you...I know we're a bit overweight but nowhere near needing to worry about seatbelts! I only wear a size 14!

That’s true. I’m size 12 now- was 16 this time last year. I fly twice a month and some are still snugger than others.
but I was nowhere near needing an extender when I was a 16 at 13.5 stone and 5’4. Many people are a lot bigger than I was- I presume they’re asking for extenders but who knows. Planes are noisy and busy before take off. Honestly don’t worry.

If you dont mind me asking how much weight did you lose to go from a size 16 to a 12? please.

Im a size16 nudging 18 at the moment. I want to be a size 12.

I feel more than a bit overweight.

I wish i was size 14 im a 16 verging on a 18.

They get trimmed down to repair them when they fray. Meaning that 2 seats next to each other can end up having different length belts, because one has needed repair whilst the other hasn’t. So really it’s down to luck, not the airline of anything although Ryanair has quite a new fleet by industry standards so that might go in your favour. It isn’t a big deal if you need it though. You could always discretely when you board to avoid asking in front of other passengers if you feel self conscious, although honestly they won’t care, and then not use it if the main belt fits.

How much weight did you lose to get from a size 16 to a 12 if you dont mind me asking?.

I am a 16 at the moment and would love to be a 12.

I know im never going to be a size 8 or 10 ever again. If i get down to a 12 i will be over the moon.
I dont want to go on weight loss injections but i have been looking at XLS medical max strength and the fat binder one.

captureitrememberit · 01/07/2025 14:53

I am 5 foot and 17 stone (working on it), and carry the majority of my weight on my stomach, and even I have never needed one on any airline (I fly regularly). X

What's you waist measurement - that's more relevant than your weight or height

TheCoralMoose · 01/07/2025 14:56

Do airlines provide seat belt extenders?.

I thought that if you think you might need one you have to buy your own from Amazon Ebay etc.

What would happen if a passenger boarded then realised the belt didnt fit but there were no extenders available?.

Would the passenger be asked to leave the plane in that case?.
It wouldnt be safe to fly without wearing a belt in landing , takeoff and any turbulence surely.

Cattery · 01/07/2025 14:57

You won’t have a problem. Seatbelts go across your lap at the top your thighs not round your waist

Yes of course they provide them and they will have plenty of them, just like the infant belts. No you can’t use your own because it won’t be allowed for safety reasons. You might get away with it if they don’t notice it but if they do then you’re risking a bigger scene than if you’d just discreetly ask for it whilst boarding.

Cracklingsilverwear · 01/07/2025 15:01

If you need one - just ask for one.

it’s nothing to be ashamed of . Better to be comfortable and safe.

air hostess will just get it in the same way as if you asked for a glass of water.

don’t overthink it.
